    Description: Description of an experimental dual resonant cavity absorption cell for observing microwave spectroscopic double-resonance effects. The device is composed of two Fabry-Perot interferometers excited by independent microwave sources and mounted at right angles in a suitable vacuum enclosure. The pumping transition is modulated by one source and the modulation induced on the rf absorption in the orthogonal cavity is detected.

    Description: The mid-latitude ionospheric and neutral atmospheric models are coupled with an advanced three dimensional ray tracing program to see what success would be obtained in predicting the wave propagation conditions and to study to what extent the use of theoretical ionospheric models is practical. The Penn State MK 1 ionospheric model, the Mitra-Rowe D region model, and the Groves' neutral atmospheric model are used throughout this work to represent the real electron densities and collision frequencies. The Faraday rotation and differential Doppler velocities from satellites, the propagation modes for long distance high frequency propagation, the group delays for each mode, the ionospheric absorption, and the spatial loss are all predicted.

    Description: Study illustrating how the presence of a high-intensity pulse of radiation can distort its own passage through a plane differentially shearing medium. It is demonstrated that the distortion is a sensitive function of the precise, and detailed, variation of the medium's refractive index by considering a couple of simple examples which are worked out numerically. In view of the high-intensity pulses observed from pulsars (approximately 10 to the 30th ergs per pulse), it is believed that the present calculations are of more than academic interest in helping unravel the fundamental properties of pulse production in, and propagating through, differentially sheared media - such as pulsars' magnetospheres within the so-called speed-of-light circle.

    Description: This review is meant for the nonspecialist who wants a simple physical picture. Some simple calculations are given to show why waves and irregularities in the solar wind are of importance in obtaining a physical understanding of the dynamical processes occurring in the interplanetary medium. The basic physics of various phenomena observed in the heliosphere, resulting because of the presence of waves in the solar wind, is spelled out in some detail. The most fundamental point made in this review is that a considerable body of phenomena occurring in the solar wind are either caused directly or modified significantly by the turbulent waves that are always present in the solar wind.

    Description: We give a detailed discussion of the group-velocity ray paths in a plane differentially sheared medium with constant index of refraction as measured by a local inertial observer. For a given velocity profile the numerical ray paths are presented graphically for several representative cases. Assuming that the medium has a volume emissivity and that a given flux of radiation is incident at the base of the medium, the flux of radiation leaving the slab as a function of exit angle is calculated and presented in the same representative cases. Peaks and discontinuities in the flux generally appear at given exit angles, but their locations and the half-widths of the peaks depend sensitively on the index of refraction.
