    Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of bis(cyclopentadienyl)tungsten tetrasulphide, (C5H5)2WS4, has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray data collected by counter techniques. The coordination about the tungsten atom, consisting of the two terminal sulfur atoms of the tetrasulphide chain and the ring centroids of the two cyclopentadienyl rings, may be described as a distorted tetrahedron. The inner S-S bond distance is found to be somewhat shorter than the outer two S-S bond distances in the tetrasulphide chain. The substance crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP21/n witha = 11·242(3),b = 12·154(5),c = 8·790(2) Å and β = 92·93(3) °. The structure was refined by least-squares techniques using 1581 independent reflections for whichFsk0/2 〉 2σ(Fsk0/2), and the refinement converged at a conventionalR factor (onF) of 4·5 %.

    Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of bis(tetramethylammonium)di(π-(1)-2-thiollyl)iron(II), C8H44B20FeN2S2, has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray data collected by counter techniques. The material crystallizes in the orthorhombic system: space groupIbam, z=4, a=15·585(5), b=12·324(4), and c=14·806(6) Å. The B10H10S2− moiety is an icosahedron with the sulphur atom and four boron atoms forming that part of the cage which is within bonding distance of the iron. The sulphur atom and one boron atom are disordered. The structure was solved by standard techniques and the least squares refinement, using 969 independent reflexions for whichF 0 2 ⩾ 3σ(F 0 2), converged to a conventionalR factor (onF) of 4·2%.

    Notes: Abstract Expressions are derived to give entropy and temperature in a material which obeys the Mie-Grüneisen equation, based on the assumption that both the Hugoniot pressure and the Grüneisen parameter may be expanded as infinite power series in strain. The resulting equations are used to obtain specific expressions for isothermal compression and for isentropic release from a Hugoniot state. A method is suggested for determining the Grüneisen parameter (as a function of strain) from isothermal compression data. Certain limitations involving possible phase transitions are pointed out.

    Notes: Abstract Results obtained in a previous paper [1] are modified to consider materials which exhibit a linear shock velocity—particle velocity Hugoniot, and for which the specific heat at constant volume is a function of temperature. Also, a method for synthesizing functional dependence of the Gruneisen parameter on strain is illustrated. A Mie-Gruneisen equation of state for water is obtained using this method.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die statistische ≪thermodynamische≫ Beschreibung einer Gruppe von neuen Systemen wird entwickelt. Drei Bedingungen beschreiben die Gruppe: 1. Jedes System hat eine bekannte Bevölkerung. 2. Die Elemente des Systems haben eine einzige wichtige willkürlich verteilte Eigenschaft und eines der Momente dieser Verteilung ist bekannt. 3. Die Entartung der verteilten Eigenschaft ist proportional zu einer einfachen Potenz dieser Eigenschaft. Das Maxwell-Boltzmannsche ideale Gas ist ein Sonderfall dieser Gruppe. Die thermodynamische Beschreibung der Gruppe der Systeme umfasst die Verteilungsfunktion, eine fundamentale Gleichung und Zustandsgleichungen. Zwei typische Anwendungen (eine des Regenflusses, und eine der Verteilung des Einkommens) werden beschrieben.

    Notes: Résumé L'administration par voie s.c. à des souris femelles adultes, d'une dose quotidienne (de l'ordre de 0,025 à 5 mg) de cortisone en solution saline pendant 21 jours, fait diminue le nombre des lymphocytes et des cellules mesothéliales du liquide péritonéal. Il est possible que la cortisone inhibe la production de ces cellules. Ces données suggèrent aussi une transformation des cellules mésothéliales en «daisy cells» à noyaux vides. L'irritation produite par les très fortes doses de cortisone pourrait, en partie, expliquer l'élèvation du nombre des leucocytes à noyaux polymorphes.
