Summary 1. The effect of oxygen pressure on the sintering of silicon dioxide and the sintering and recrystallization of titanium, magnesium, and aluminum oxides at high temperatures was studied. 2. Dissociation activation of sintering and recrystallization processes in oxides at high temperatures became appreciable when the partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase was commesurable with the dissociation pressure of the oxides. 3. In the preparation of ceramics from pure, difficultly sinterable oxides (MgO, Cr2O3, etc.) the sintering may be accelerated by firing in a gas medium with a low partial pressure of oxygen (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, inert gases, vacuum).
