Description: A cluster of boulders at Station 6 (Apollo 17 landing site) consists of breccias derived from the North Massif. Three preliminary lithologic units were established, on the basis of photogeologic interpretations; all lithologies identified photogeologically were sampled. Breccia clasts and matrices studied petrographically and chemically fall into two groups by modal mineralogy: (1) low-K Fra Mauro or high basalt composition, consisting of 50-60% modal feldspar, approximately 45% orthopyroxene and 1-7% Fe-Ti oxide; (2) clasts consisting of highland basalt composition, consisting of 70% feldspar, 30% orthopyroxene and olivine and a trace of Fe-Ti oxide.

Description: The samples analyzed include 28 spheres, portions of spheres, and angular fragments from soil 15101. Emerald green glasses from other soils are identical to those from 15101. The composition of the green glass is unlike that of any other major lunar glass group. The Fe content is comparable to that in mare basalts, but Ti is much lower. The Mg content is much higher than in most lunar materials analyzed to date, and the Cr content is also high. The low Al content is comparable to that of mare basalt glasses.

Description: Glass compositions in the Luna 20 soil indicate a minor contribution of mare rocks and a major contribution of highly feldspathic highland material. Glasses with the composition of highland basalt (anorthositic gabbro or norite) predominate in a range of highly aluminous glasses. The analyses of minerals in the soil show that the highland rocks have a unique assemblage of minerals that can readily be distinguished from the mineral assemblages of either mare or KREEP basalts. The soils are characterized by abundant anorthitic, low-Fe plagioclase. Highly magnesian orthopyroxenes, pigeonites, and augites are the most prominent pyroxenes. Unlike mare basalt pyroxenes, clinopyroxenes with intermediate Ca values are not abundant, but extreme iron enrichment toward pyroxferroite does occur. Olivines are more abundant than at other sites and are Mg-rich, low in Ca and Cr. Spinels with compositions approaching MgAl2O4 predominate over pleonastes and chromites. Ilmenite and metal are present but not abundant. The mineral compositions are consistent with derivation from a suite of highly feldspathic rocks in which highland basalt compositions predominate.

Description: Use of computer-controlled one-dimensional area-scanning photometers to observe the occultation of the Beta Scorpii system by Jupiter on May 13, 1971. Six high-quality light curves were obtained; three of the occultations of the brighter component Beta Sco A and three of Beta Sco C. The mean scale height of the Jovian upper atmosphere is 32 plus or minus 6 km near -10 deg zenographic latitude, 31 plus or minus 2 km at -47 deg zenographic latitude, and 24 plus or minus 2 km at -57 deg zenographic latitude. The determination of the atmospheric scale height is highly sensitive to the background level subtracted, providing a possible explanation of an earlier result by Baum and Code (1953) placing the scale height at about 8 km. Correlated departures of the light curve from a theoretical isothermal curve are reproduced in the three bright-star curves, and are thus not due to random density fluctuations in the Jovian atmosphere, but are rather due to global stratification. Details of the stratification, which includes at least a number of warm layers, are examined by deconvolution of the light curves. There is evidence for a high-temperature (T greater than 300 K) thermosphere on two of the bright-star light curves.

Description: Extensive microprobe analyses have been made of pyroxenes, plagioclases, olivines, opaque minerals, and glasses in two 0.025 g lunar samples returned from the Luna 16 mission, with the aim to characterize the Mare Fecunditatis regolith. No major differences were found between the near surface soil horizon A and horizon D at approximately 30 cm depth. Resulting characteristics of the mineral examined are presented and discussed.

Description: Approximately 180 glasses in each of three Apollo 15 soils have been analyzed for nine elements. Cluster analysis techniques allow the recognition of preferred glass compositions that are equated with parent rock compositions. Green glass rich in Fe and Mg, poor in Al and Ti may be derived from deep-seated pyroxenitic material now present at the Apennine Front. Fra Mauro basalt (KREEP) is most abundant in the LM soil and is tentatively identified as ray material from the Aristillus-Autolycus area. Highland basalt (anorthositic gabbro), believed to be derived from the lunar highlands, has the same composition as at other landing sites, but is less abundant. The Apennine Front is probably not true highland material but may contain a substantial amount of material with the composition of Fra Mauro basalt, but lacking the high-K content.

Description: Electron microprobe analyses are presented for nine elements in 250 glasses and 434 pyroxenes, eight elements in 113 olivines, and six elements in 354 feldspars, 35 spinels, and 159 ilmenites. All grains are from the 125-425 micron fraction of horizon A and horizon D soil from the Luna 16 sample. A norm is presented for each glass analysis and the structural formula is calculated for each mineral analysis.

Description: Review of the mineral chemistry, crystallography, mosaic assemblages, and oriented inclusions of lunar rock sample 76535, and discussion of its depth of formation. Its texture, chemistry, and phase relationships are shown to indicate that it formed deep within the lunar crust. It is the first crystalline lunar rock found to date to contain evidence of a high pressure mineral assemblage formed under static conditions.
