Description: The accomplishments of the Apollo 17 flight are summarized. The basic objective of the mission was to sample basin-rim highland material and adjacent mare material and to investigate the geological evolutionary relationship between these two major units. The lunar experiments which were conducted include: (1) lunar field geology, (2) surface electrical experiments, (3) lunar traverse gravimeter experiments, (4) lunar seismic profiling experiment, (5) lunar ejecta and meteorites experiment, (6) analysis of lunar atmosphere composition, and (7) heat flow experiments.

Description: The region of the 8200 A Band of H2O was studied in spectra of Venus obtained with an echelle grating spectrograph operated at an altitude of 14.6 km in the NASA Learjet research aircraft. Taking advantage of low foreground absorption, observing at a time of velocity quadrature, differential spectroscopy with respect to lunar spectra, and spectrum averaging, we establish a value of H2O of 3 plus or minus 20 microns for the total path over the entire disk. This value differs from earlier studies of the integrated disk but supports the low values recently derived from infrared bands and by very high spectral resolution groundbased studies.

Description: We present some of the results of a rocket flight which obtained a stigmatic spectrum of the sun in the region 1190 to 1320A. The experiment achieved a spectral resolution of 0.01A throughout this range, and the effective angular resolution was about 20 sec. Lines which are formed in the chromosphere and transition zone show strong fluctuations with position on the disk. The correspondence between the H Lyman-alpha profile and chromospheric details seen in the Ca K-line is demonstrated.
