Photochemistry of small Rings, XX1). Reactions of Carbena-cyclopentadienes with Cycloheptatriene. - Synthesis of Homonorcaradienes and SesquifulvalenesPhotolysis of carbena-cyclopentadienes 2 in cycloheptatriene leads to spiro-homonorcaradienes 6 and cyclopentadienyl-heptatrienes 7. The compounds 6 can be characterized by Diels-Alder-reaction and catalytic hydrogenation. 6 does not undergo Cope-rearrangement but irreversibly forms 13. Catalytic hydrogenation of 7f produces the known 15f. Dehydrogenation of 7 gives the sesquifulvalenes 17. - The formation of 6 and 7 involves an n-π*-excitation of 5 whose S1-state has an energy of 71-72 kcal/mole. The multiplicity of the carbene as well as steric factors of 2 seem to be important for the reaction.
Notes:
