Description / Table of Contents: Electric properties of suspension chlorinated polyethylenes (chlorine content about 73%) are investigated at the frequency of 5 MHz, within the temperature range from 20 to 80°C. The observed relaxations are dependent on the chemical structure of the polymer. In addition, dynamic mechanical properties are studied within a temperature range of -100 to +190°C. No parallelism is noticed between electrical and mechanical properties for this rigid-chain polymer.

Notes: The modification of poly(acrylonitrile) was effected via formation of poly(acrylamideoxime) followed by condensation with Ti, Zr and Hf compounds. Modification was effected utilizing generally the interfacial technique.Thermal properties are reported. Initial degradation in the 200 to 350°C region probably occurs via the formation of cyclic products whereas at temperatures 〉500°C degradation in air occurs via oxidation of the remaining product.

Notes: Proper drying techniques prior to molding can eliminate the overall effects of moisture on the physicochemical properties of polycarbonate. Problems associated with moisture in polycarbonate during molding are described in detail. Moisture absorption is very rapid with the maximum allowable moisture content of 0.03 percent reached within 30 minutes at 49 percent RH and 75°F. Molding with excess moisture content causes a chemical and physical degradation resulting in reduction in tensile impact strength, tensile elongation, ultimate tensile strength, proportional limit and molecular weight. New and existing techniques and procedures for degradation detection were investigated, such as intrinsic viscosity, infrared spectrometry, and thermal methods of analysis. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) proved the most satisfactory. GPC provided information on the average molecular weight and polydispersity.

Notes: Polymeric films deposited from the vapor of C4Cl6 by the surface-photopolymerization technique are electrically and mechanically continuous on various substrates when very thin. The thickness of the films depends upon irradiation time with wavelengths in the region 2000-3000Å. Re-irradiation in oxygen (air) of the polymeric films with light of these low wavelengths leads to patterned removal of the films. Since films 500Å thick and less can resist etchants for various substrates, a new and extremely thin positive photoresist system is possible. Resolution of etched substrates to lines a few microns wide has been demonstrated. If the polymeric films from C4Cl6 are deposited from the monomeric vapor at lower substrate temperatures they are soluble in various solvents. Re-irradiation with UV light with the films in vacuum produces a patterned fixing of the polymer with respect to acetone. A negative photoresist system is therefore possible. Again, films of thickness 500Å and less can resist various etchants such that substrates can be etched to high resolution.

Notes: The pulsed beam technique has been used to achieved a high data acuumulation rate in an energy-dispersive analytical system consisting of an electron probe analyser and the Harwell ‘Highspec’ pulse analyser system 3074. The use of fast beam switching ( ∼ 30 ns transient time) and the special timing facilities available in the Harwell equipment reduce the spectrum contamination due to displacement of the probe during switching to a low level and also provide precise measurements of live time, essential for accurate analysis. Analyses performed at spectrum accumulation rate of up to 12 kP.P.S. shows agreement with accepted values to within ± 1% for major constituents. Simple modification of the system permits accumulation rates up to 25 kP.P.S.

Notes: The diffusion of styrene vapor in ethyl cellulose film has been studied as a function of styrene solubility in the film at 50°C. Methods and data are presented for determining the equilibrium solubility of styrene in ethyl cellulose as a function of vapor pressure at 50°C. The permeation rates of styrene vapor through 3-mil film were determined under steady state conditions for various pressures of pure styrene vapor on one side of the film and vacuum on the other side. From a plot of permeation rates versus styrene solubility the diffusion coefficient was calculated as a function of concentration. Measurements made over a concentration range of 0 to 0.7 g. styrene/cm.3 of unswollen film show that the diffusion coefficient first increases rapidly with concentration, then goes through a maximum, and finally levels off at 10-7 cm.2/sec. In the limited range of 0.06 to 0.10 g./cm.3 the diffusion coefficient varies exponentially with concentration as has been reported for other systems in a similar range. However, such a functionality does not represent the present system over a broad concentration range. These results, if generally applicable to other systems, indicate that the nature of the diffusion process for organic vapors in polymers may be considerably more complicated than formerly supposed.
