Description / Table of Contents:
A white, well crystallized iron(II)-acetate, Fe(CH3COO)2, can be obtained by a very simple operation. Its susceptibility moment is approx. 5.3 B. M.Oxidation in anhydrous acetic acid solution leads to the well known basic iron(III)-acetate, (Fe3(CH3COO)8OH)n. Oxidation in methanolic solution yields yellow-coloured iron(III)-methoxy-acetates of variable compositions.Formic acid, oxalic acid and dimethylsulfate are precipitating agents in acetic acid solutions. Pyridine forms at least two different coordination compounds. The amphoteric behaviour with acetyl chloride and solutions of alcali-acetates in acetic acid has been studied, and a new method of preparing anhydrous iron(II)-chloride is proposed.Using a special Soxhlet-apparatus, a black crystalline iron acetate with mixed valencies, (Fe2+, Fe3+) (CH3COO)5, can be obtained from a mixture of both iron(II)-acetate and basic iron(III)-acetate.
Notes:
