Description / Table of Contents: Summary Conventional creep and crushing tests are usually concerned with the effects of loadings which are applied during relatively short periods of a few minutes. However, gradual applications of the loading, especially during the initial stages, can produce increases in the ultimate strength of the concrete due to a form of solid body compaction which can the take place. The paper describes the increases in strength which have been obtained with mortars and concretes made with Thames Valley aggregates.

Notes: Abstract This study considers the large interaction parameter magnetoaerodynamic boundary layer associated with the free stream flow of a conducting fluid over an infinitely long circular insulator cylinder with the applied magnetic field normal to the distant free stream flow. The investigation is conducted in two parts; a theoretical solution of the associated boundary layer equations and a qualitative experimental investigation to allow visualization of flow separation caused by the magnetic field. The general integral formulation of Galerkin-Kantorovich-Dorodnitsyn is used to determine the boundary layer thickness, momentum thickness, displacement thickness, approximate separation point, and velocity profiles.

Notes: Abstract The effect of deformation and heat-treatments on magnetisation of superconducting Mo/34 at.% Re alloy was investigated. The microstructure was studied using optical and electron microscopy. The values of the parameterκ of the GLAG theory were determined by using three different methods, and they are found to be in accordance with some of the predictions of the Maki theory. The results show that in deformed specimens the magnetic hysteresis is mainly due to the interaction of Abrikosov supercurrent vortices with dislocation tangles; both twin boundaries and grain boundaries are relatively ineffective in causing flux hindrance. The hysteresis observed after annealing has been explained in terms of the occurrence of dislocation rearrangement and the precipitation of the sigma phase. Flux-pinning by dislocation tangles has been treated as a special case of pinning by normal particles and a magnitude of the resulting pinning force is obtained. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model of flux-pinning.

Notes: Abstract A non-destructive method of quantitative analysis for boron is described. The method, which depends on the use of a plastic film to record tracks from the 10B(n, α)7Li reaction, is in general applicable to any solid material but is here described in detail for the analysis of ferrous alloys. Boron contents from 1 ppm to 10% may be determined, and the technique may be applied also to microanalysis of individual features such as precipitates and grain-boundaries in the metal structure.

Notes: Abstract Brief reviews are given of the effect of heat-treatment on the microstructure of cold-worked bcc metals and the superconducting properties of niobium alloys. Particular attention is paid to the influence of interstitial impurities in these processes. The annealing effects in microstructure and superconducting properties of a cold-worked Nb-65 at.% Ti alloy, containing oxygen as a major impurity, have been studied. The precipitation process takes the form βTiNb + O2→ various Ti oxides → αTi + TiO. Differences in precipitation sequence are described for vacuum-annealing and annealing in impure argon. Flux-pinning is related to the microstructural observations. At least three pinning mechanisms appear to operate; dislocation pinning and two types of precipitate pinning. These observations are in accord with previously proposed pinning models.

Notes: An infrared method has been developed for the determination of the isotacticity of polypropylene in the 90-100% range. The method requires the annealing of thin films at 165-167°C. for 3 hr. in an inert atmosphere, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. For approximate answers the ratio of the intensity of the 10.00 μ band to that of the 10.27 μ band can be reported as the fraction of isotactic material. Better results are obtained, however, by using Figure 2 as a calibration curve and reading the values from it.
