    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the secondary lamellae has been examined in four species of free-swimming elasmobranchs, two species of Raia and five species of bony flatfishes. Microvilli which are present on the outer epithelial surface vary in form and size. It is suggested that a possible function of the microvilli is to anchor a surface mucus covering whose possible functions are discussed. Vesicles are found immediately beneath the microvilli in elasmobranchs but not in teleosts. Chloride and mucous cells are present on the secondary lamellae of all species and often have microvilli of greater length than on the other cells of the epithelium. Micropinocytotic vesicles are found on both sides of the basement membrane. The number of columns enclosed in the pillar cells varied from 5–11. The water-blood pathway showed variations in thickness not only between different species but also in different parts of individual secondary lamellae. A general trend in the mean total thickness was found, being greater in the swimming elasmobranchs (10.22 μ) than in the rays (5.47 μ) and bony flatfish (3.59 μ). This trend is also seen in the greater length of microvilli and thickness of basement membrane in the elasmobranchs than in the teleosts.

    Notes: Studies were made of the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the helix-coil transitions of poly (A + U) and poly (A + 2U). The results were analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment which emphasized the cooperative aspect of the transitions. The helix-to-coil volume changes were found to be small and negative indicating pressure stabilization of the coil form. The significance of the results with respect to other denaturation measurements was discussed.

    Notes: Solutions of calf thymus DNA have been degraded in the presence of vibrating air bubbles in ultrasonic fields of low power which would not normally induce ultrasonic cavitation. The DNA was degraded to a limiting intrinsic viscosity, after which further irradiation by ultrasound had little or no effect. This limiting intrinsic viscosity decreased with increase in the ultrasonic intensity. Previously developed theories have-been adapted to calculate the maximum velocity gradient associated with the streaming of the solution around such vibrating air bubbles. The tensile force which is induced and which acts on the DNA has been calculated on the basis of current theories of degradation by hydrodynamic shear. These calculations indicate that the degradation of the DNA by ultrasound under conditions of “stable cavitation” is mainly the result of the shearing forces engendered in the solution around the oscillating bubbles.

    Notes: An infrared method has been developed for the determination of the isotacticity of polypropylene in the 90-100% range. The method requires the annealing of thin films at 165-167°C. for 3 hr. in an inert atmosphere, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. For approximate answers the ratio of the intensity of the 10.00 μ band to that of the 10.27 μ band can be reported as the fraction of isotactic material. Better results are obtained, however, by using Figure 2 as a calibration curve and reading the values from it.

    Notes: The effect of 30-49 wt-% nitrile group content on the properties of copolymers is demonstrated. The nitrile is furnished by either acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The exceptional resistance of such high nitrile content resins to the passage of gases and of solvents is shown and variations therein demonstrated for different comonomers. Transparent, tough, grafted polymers of good color are described which retain these properties. These qualities, combined with low second-order transition temperatures and adequate heat deflection temperatures, provide polymers of interest wherever containment and barrier are desired. Bottles, thermoformed containers, etc., could benefit from the use of some of the polymers described.

    Notes: Detailed characterization of the low molecular weight polyols used as intermediates in rigid polyurethane foam production has not been feasible to date. Gas-liquid chromatography of the trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of the polyols now offers a more complete picture of polyol composition, particularly with regard to the molecular weight distribution. The data may be interpreted on a semiquantitative basis. The study of processing variables in polyol manufacture, detection of impurities and analysis of unknown polyols or those based on mixed initiators may all be facilitated by use of this GLC technique.

    Notes: Clinical studies will permit only small sections of tendon sheaths to be removed for biopsy at restricted levels as the sheaths were to be used for tendon grafting. In active gliding programs, biopsy has been limited to small sheath sections in immediate relation to the distal or proximal anastomosis where gliding motion may be induced or minimal. In the passive gliding programs, biopsy has been limited to the most proximal segments where considerable folding of the sheath occurs or cul-de-sac buckling of the implant may produce irritation.As these were the only practical clinical sources of sheath sections for biopsy and study, the authors felt that a comparison study of sheath development in animals would broaden our understanding in humans. With this objective in mind, three canine laboratory studies were carried out where, for pure purposes of investigation, entire sheath sections were removed at designated time intervals for study.The flexible implants were well accepted, affording the opportunity to observe development of early sheaths in a controlled connective tissue environment, free from the stress of joint motion.The semi-rigid implants showed equal acceptance in side-by-side tissue level of the same dog as the flexible implant. This influenced changes in artificial tendon development from extrusion to the more exacting mold fabrication. It seemed evident that the degree of increase in stiffness of the new artificial tendons to gain a superior surface for gliding and increased strength would not change tissue acceptance providing flexibility was maintained.The cellular response in this study did not seem to represent a foreign body phenomena but an orderly acceptance of the soft tissue environment to the smooth surface of the inert implant.It is concluded that this study confirmed in animals the clinical findings of Mayer, Bunnell, Milgram, and Carroll.The consistent orderly development of the new sheaths formed in response to the static implants is impressive. The authors believe the appearance of these histologic sections are likely correlations with the development of new sheaths around the Hunter Tendon Prosthesis during the three-four week postoperative period when the hand is resting in a functional dressing.

    Notes: In sheep, chronic arterial cannulation with Silastic has led to thrombus formation and to intimal fibroplasia of a type not previously reported.
