Notes: The preparation of L-lysine peptides (Lysn, n = 2-14) from polyL-lysine is described. Fractionation by ion-exchange column chromatography of poly-L-lysine hydrolysates on a preparative scale resulted in 0.2-1.0 g quantities of individual members of the poly-L-lysine series. The peptides isolated proved to be analytically pure and the optical configuration was fully retained, as demonstrated by complete enzymic digestion. Peptides higher than n = 14 were also prepared. They consisted of oligolysine groups of narrow and accurately determined size distribution. Potentiometric titrations were used both to characterize the products and to demonstrate the characteristic dependence of the dissociation constants on size of the peptide.

Notes: A natural rubber vulcanizate containing almost entirely monosulfidic crosslinks was oxidized in oxygen and with tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The changes in physical properties due to oxidation were followed by stress-strain measurements, and the changes in chemical structure were investigated with chemical probes, and by spectroscopic methods. The results show that when the oxidized vulcanizates are heated at 75°C., the monosulfidic crosslinks are broken, that crosslinks containing two sulfur atoms are formed, and that conjugated diene and triene structures are introduced into the main polyisoprene chains.

Notes: Mannitol has long been known as a product of glucose metabolism by some strains of Aspergillus. Apparently no concerted effort, has been made to develop a practical fermentation process to make mannitol. Work at the Northern Laboratory has shown that nearly all strains of white Aspergillus produce significant amounts of mannitol; many strains of black Aspergillus also have this characteristic. Aspergillus candidus NRRL 305 is an exceptionally good mannitol producer. Studies on a fermentation process were conducted in 20-1, stainless steel fermentors, without baffles. Czapek-Dox medium, modified by addition of corn meal, yeast extract, and enzymatically hydrolyzed casein was the most satisfactory medium tested. Suitable increments of glucose were fed daily to the fermentors. The duration of the fermentation was from 10 to 16 days. The effects of agitation, aeration, temperature, and pH of the medium were studied. Under optimal conditions yields of mannitol approached 50% of the glucose consumed.

Notes: The theoretical equations for the flow of Newtonian fluids in a falling cylinder viscometer with eccentricity are developed. The error in fall velocity of the cylinder caused by eccentricity is determined and presented in tabular form. An approximate method to determine the error in fall velocity caused by eccentricity for non-Newtonian fluids of the power law type is also presented. For the Newtonian case, n=1, the approximate method is shown to give excellent agreement with the exact method.

Notes: Data are presented for wall temperatures and heat transfer coefficients for solid-vapor mixtures of parahydrogen and nitrogen flowing in an electrically heated straight tube of length 40 times its diameter. These are interpreted by the application of flat plate, constant property boundary-layer theory to models in which the solid particle geometrical distribution takes on simple limiting forms. The observed enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient over that for gas alone traveling at the same velocity is qualitatively predicted as a function of a dimensionless heat flux, the Sterman parameter qw/ρvUλ.

Notes: Peak nucleate boiling fluxes for liquid oxygen near 1 atm, have been measured on a 0.75-in.-diameter flat polished horizontal platinum surface located in a known, variable magnetic-field gradient that produced steady acceleration (which could be maintained indefinitely) on the oxygen acting in opposition to the earth's gravitation, gE. Measurements were made under condition ranging from net negative (directed away from the heated surface) accelerations of -0.03gE acting on the bulk liquid to the normal accelerations, 1.0gE. The results indicate that at zero g conditions for the bulk liquid, the peak nucleate boiling flux is ∼0.55 of the value at 1.0gE. For bulk-liquid accelerations ranging from ∼0.25 to 1gE, the experimental results confirm the ¼ power dependence of peak flux on acceleration as predicted by various correlations. However, below 0.25gE the peak flux becomes insensitive to the acceleration, varying approximately in proportion to the 1/14 power of the net acceleration. At bulk-liquid conditions of zero g (±0.005gE) the peak plux breaks sharply and falls by a factor of 10 between zero g and -0.03gE (for this apparatus).

Notes: Heat transfer coefficients have been measured over a range of Reynolds numbers for a solid-vapor mixture of parahydrogen discharging through a heated brass tube below the triple point pressure. A correlation is given which is shown by a formal analysis of a simple model to account for most of the system variables.

Notes: A variational method has been used to study the entrance and exit effects in a falling cylinder viscometer for creeping and noncreeping flow. The computed result indicate solution convergence for NRe less than 100 and agree with experiment within ± 0.5% for NRe less than 25.
