    Description: The research is reported which was conducted to develop devices for measuring vibrations and deflections of parts, such as impellers, shafts, turbine wheels, and inducers in operating turbopumps. Three devices were developed to the breadboard stage: ultrasonic Doppler transducer, flash X-rays, and light-pipe reflectance. It was found that the X-ray technique is applicable to the shaft assembly and the turbine seal of the J-2 pump, and the light-pipe-reflectance device appears to be ideal for cryogenic pump sections.

    Description: A review is given of information obtained in recent years concerning the effects on sonic-boom signatures of departures of the atmosphere from a perfectly stratified time invariant model. These effects include the observed random variations in boom overpressures from those expected for a stratified atmosphere, the anomalously large and variable rise times, and the occurrence of spiked or rounded waveforms rather than the characteristic N waves. The extent of the variability in data recorded during actual flight tests is summarized in the form of histograms, representing experimentally obtained probability density functions. The physical mechanisms believed to be responsible for the variations and the anomalous features in the signatures are described. These include refraction and subsequent wavefront rippling by turbulence, the possible focusing or defocusing of rays, the formation of caustics, and the phenomenon of wavefront folding, diffraction, and scattering. Recent statistical theories of shock propagation through a turbulent atmosphere proposed by Crow, George and Plotkin, Pierce, Horning, and others are reviewed.

    Description: A problem in the linear theory of elasticity is considered wherein a layer with a circular cylindrical hole is subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement. The solution utilizes Navier's equations of elasticity which are solved by means of extended Hankel transforms. A special case in which the radial displacement is a linear function of the axial coordinate is presented. Numerical results are given in graphical form for the case when hole radius and layer thickness are equal. The inversion integrals were evaluated numerically using Longman's technique for computing infinite integrals of oscillatory functions.

    Description: A lumped-parameter model of a rectangular plate is developed by assuming fundamental mode solutions and using Hamilton's Principle and the Euler equations to set up the differential equation of motion for the system. The plate theory used may be described as the dynamic analogue of the von Karman large-deflection theory. Four sets of symmetrical boundary conditions are considered with the restriction of uniform pressure dynamic loads. The model takes the form of a mass on a cubic-hardening spring with each term defined by algebraic expressions of the plate parameters. The results for some specific problems are compared with two previous solutions. This method is less accurate but simpler to develop and apply.

    Description: Unpowered automatic approaches and landings were conducted to study navigation, guidance, and control problems associated with terminal area, approach, and landing operation for the space shuttle. A Convair 990 aircraft was equipped with a digital flight-control computer connected to the aircraft control systems and displays. The flight tests evaluated, from 11,300 m to touchdown, the performance of a navigation and guidance concept that utilized blended radio/inertial navigation with VOR, DME, and ILS as the ground radio navigation aids. The results from 36 automatic approaches and landings are analyzed. Preliminary results indicate that this concept may provide sufficient accuracy that automatic landing of the unpowered shuttle orbiter can be accomplished on a conventional size runway.

    Description: It is pointed out that many space-manufacturing processes will require the manipulation of weightless molten material within a container in such a way that the material does not touch the container wall. A description is given of an acoustical method which can be used for the positioning and shaping of any molten material including nonconductors such as glasses. The new approach makes use of an acoustical standing wave which is excited within an enclosure or resonator.

    Description: A finite-difference method is developed to determine the large amplitude dynamic responses of thin elastic plates subjected to uniform pressure pulse-type loads. Four different sets of boundary conditions are considered. Some specific problems are solved. The results are compared with approximate solutions obtained by Yamaki (1961). The numerical method presented provides an accurate and efficient approximate solution to the problem, and should be useful as a check on other approximate methods. The grid-size and the time-step necessary for obtaining numerical stability depend on the particular problem. For many cases the method converges rapidly and a rather large grid-size and time-step is adequate.
