    Notes: Abstract The present work reports a portion of our continuing effort to determine the mechanism(s) whereby aflatoxins cause toxic responses in in vitro cultured plant tissues. Few investigations have dealt with the mode of action of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in excised plant tissues. Here is detailed AFB1 influence on growth, uptake and incorporation of 14C-leucine by excised, incubated soya-bean roots. Pure AFB1 was added to culture medium prior to autoclaving. One gram fresh weight portions of roots from three-day old soya-bean seedlings were excised and incubated for 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours. Growth was assayed by following changes in root dry weight. Aflatoxin B1 inhibited root dry weight at both 20 and 30 μg/ml. Uptake of 14C-leucine was checked by following its depletion from the medium. Reduced 14C-leucine uptake by roots exposed to 20 μg/ml AFB1 suggests that the toxin may alter the plasmalemma. A possible role for AFB1 in modification of membrane-associated amino acid transport mechanisms is discussed. Incorporation of 14C-leucine into trichloroacetic acid-precipitable cytoplasm was assayed. Inhibition of this incorporation at 20 μg/ml AFB1 was most apparent at 12 hours. Thus, AFB1 may also impair the ability of excised soya-bean roots to carry out protein synthesis.

    Description: An analytical method has been developed for predicting critical control inputs for which nonlinear rotational coupling may cause sudden jumps in aircraft response. The analysis includes the effect of aerodynamics which are nonlinear in angle of attack. The method involves the simultaneous solution of two polynomials in roll rate, whose coefficients are functions of angle of attack and the control inputs. Results obtained using this procedure are compared with calculated time histories to verify the validity of the method for predicting jump-like instabilities.

    Description: Measurements of sodium D-line emission from Io are reported which were made during synoptic patrols of the 1975 and 1974 apparitions. Corrected equivalent widths of the D lines are plotted against the satelliite's orbital phase reckoned from superior heliocentric conjunction, and quantitative results of selected patrol observations are provided. The results indicate that: (1) resonant scattering is most likely the dominant emission mechanism; (2) the mechanism which injects neutral sodium into the space immediately around Io underwent no major secular variation in the period between the two apparitions; (3) a less pronounced asymmetry between the peak emission rates at 90-deg and 270-deg orbital phases is present in the selected data; and (4) the measured D2/D1 intensity ratios are consistent with a value of 1.6 + or - 0.3, which corresponds to a value of the order of unity for the maximum optical depth possible for resonant scattering the D1 line center. It is suggested that an unexplained scatter of about 20% in the general emission levels is due to a variation in the ionization rate.
