Notes: Abstract Single crystals of strontium cobaltate with oxygen-deficient composition have been prepared by the floating-zone method using a lamp image furnace. Chemical and X-ray analyses showed that the composition was SrCoO2.70 with a doubled perovskite structure of cubic cells, a 0=7.710±0.001 Å. The crystal was ferromagnetic and its Curie temperature was 150 K. The effective Bohr magneton per ion of Co4+ was 1.21, suggesting that Co4+ is almost in the low spin state.

Notes: Abstract The shedding of gametes of Botryllus primigenus Oka occurs in the natural environment early in the morning, about 1 h after dawn. The shedding of the sperm from a testis is completed within a few seconds. All the spermatozoa in a testis are released at once. Ovulation begins about 10 min after shedding of sperm and is completed in about 1 min. In general, combinative testes, i.e., testes accompanied by egg follicles, macure first, followed by egg follicles, solitary testes located on the left side of the zooid, and finally those on the right side, in that order. As a result, a population of zooids of the same generation in a colony sheds sperm on 2 or 3 successive days. Illumination preceded by darkness effectively induces shedding of gametes experimentally. The required minimum dark-adaptation period is 40 min; the required minimum illumination period is dependent on light-intensity, 8, 4 and 1 min being required at 70, 200 and 3,000 lux, respectively; the latent period is temperature-dependent, 100 to 130, 70 to 90 and 50 to 60 min being required at 21o, 26o and 27.5°C, respectively. An experiment in which only part of the colony was illuminated clearly indicated that each zooid responds to light-stimulus independently.

Notes: Abstract The similarity of immunological characteristics of vertebrate and tunicate tropomyosins was studied with special regard to the phylogeny of tunicates. The antigenic sites common to vertebrate skeletal muscle tropomyosin was detected by immunohistochemical methods in the tail muscle of ascidians and muscle bands of thaliaceans, but not in the tail muscle of appendicularians. From this result, the phylogeny of the tunicate is speculated and compared with that postulated in studles of comparative morphology and taxonomy.

Notes: Summary 1. The distribution and morphology of chromaffin cells in the para-aortic region and in the ganglia of the paravertebral sympathetic chain was studied with fluorescence histochemistry and electron microscopy. 2. Four types of chromaffin cell were distinguished largely on the basis of their vesicular content: Type I cells contain large, electron-dense vesicles (600–7000 Å) and are comparable to noradrenaline-containing cells in the adrenal gland, Type II cells contain large, vesicles (600–7000 Å) that are filled with a less electron-dense material than that in Type I cells and are comparable to adrenaline-containing cells in the adrenal gland, Type III cells contain smaller vesicles (1000–3000 Å) that are incompletely filled with an electron-dense material and may represent cells that have been depleted of their catecholamines by stimulation, Type IV cells are clearly different from the other three cell types with respect to the size and appearance of the vesicles (1000–1500 Å), nuclei and rough endoplasmic reticulum and may represent immature sympathetic neurons. 3. Nerve profiles, identified as cholinergic, were found in close apposition with all four cell types. No examples of a close association between processes of chromaffin cells and sympathetic neurons were found.

Notes: Summary Mitochondrial abnormalities are reported in four cases of phaeochromocytoma. These abnormalities include swelling and scant cristae, intramitochondrial dense bodies, septate-like junctions, intercristal fusion plus spheroidal bodies, and intramitochondrial rodlets. These structural mitochondrial changes are associated with reduction in activity of the mitochondrial enzymes, monoamine oxidase and succinic dehydrogenase.

Notes: Summary From the studies of the circular dichroism and absorption spectra of Acridine Orange-amylose sulfate complex, we deduced that dyes are bound to amylose sulfate and bound Acridine Orange is regularly oriented on sulfate sites.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aus Untersuchungen des Zirkulardichroismus und der Adsorptionspektren des Acridin-Orange-Amylopectin-Sulfat-Komplex folgt eine interessante Deutung. Wenn AO in asymmetrischer Umgebung gelagert wird, entsteht rege Aktivität.
Notes: Summary From the studies of the circular dichroism and absorption spectra of acridine orange-amylopectin sulfate complex, we have deduced the following interesting explanation: If AO is situated in an environment which contains centers of asymmetry carbon atoms, it becomes optically active by induction.
