    Notes: Summary The phenomenon of colonialism which characterizes many insect groups is considered in terms of its potential effect on intraspecific competition. Intraspecific competition is assumed to be a function of the number of distinct pair encounters between 2 individuals of differing colony origin. A model is offered which describes the reduction in the number of potential competing encounters as a result of colonialism, and as such, combinatorial formulae are appropriate. For 2-colony and multi-colony systems, there is a proportionately smaller number of potential competing encounters as the size of the colonies becomes more inequitable and greater than 100 individuals in combined total. As a consequence, large inequitabilities in colony sizes are expected for nearest neighbor pairs, and thus a generally large variance in colony size for groups of colonies is also expected. Empirical data from various sources is presented and in good agreement with the predictions generated from the model.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper the different loss mechanisms of light in multimode fibres are analysed from the point of view of the extinction of leaky skew rays. First, the intrinsic loss mechanism of leaky rays due to optical tunnel effect is fully investigated by means of a quasi-classical approach and a well approximated form of the relative extinction coefficient is derived. Second, the influence of other loss phenomena, due to imperfections or impurities in the fibre such as core and cladding absorption and scattering, on the relative contribution of leaky rays is analysed. Finally some phenomena of failed excitation of leaky rays are also examined. The phenomena are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively and a comparative analysis of various effects referring to actual fibres is made.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper power coupling between two multimode optical fibres is investigated. A formalism (based on a geometrical approach) suitable for analysing any coupling configuration between fibres with any index profile and any radiance distribution is presented. The model is applied to obtain coupling losses both in uniformly excited parabolic- and step-index fibres, in the presence of all kinds of coupling errors. Numerical results of extensive utility are shown and useful asymptotic expressions of coupling efficiency, valid for small values of coupling error parameters, are derived together with some practical rules for error combination. Mention is also made of some experimental results we have obtained, which corroborate some previous assertions. The work can supply a useful tool in the design of joints and connectors between single fibres or optical cables.

    Notes: Abstract A new design for an emergency transthoracic pacing wire ensures electrode stability by engaging the myocardium rather than the endocardium. Lessened are the hazards of myocardial puncture, intraventricular thrombus, and endocarditis. Pacing studies have shown the system is safe, readily deployed, and of low threshold.
