Notes: Abstract Cytological abnormalities are observed in salivary chromosomes of stocks of Drosophila melanogaster possessing DNA-induced, v + transformations mapping either at 1∓0.0 or 1∓33.0. In initial studies, the untransformed control stock and six transformed stocks were assigned code numbers prior to cytological examination. Salivary chromosome regions 1B9 · 10—1C2 · 3 and 10A1 · 2—10B1 · 2 were carefully examined in each of the coded stocks. (Band 1B11 is tentatively identified as the site of the suppressor-of-sable locus at 1∓0.0 and band 10A1 is the site of the vermilion locus at 1∓33.0.) When cytological studies were complete each of the stocks was identified. In every transformed stock examined, anomalies had been scored in association with the chromosome region corresponding to the map position of the DNA-induced alteration. In the control stock, anomalies were observed at neither position. — Approximately 10–15% of the nuclei in transformed stocks exhibit significant departure from normality in the pertinent chromosome region. The perturbations range from minor alterations of banding pattern to apparent pieces of extra chromatin in the most extreme cases. In stocks with v+ transformations mapping at 1∓33.0, apparent extra chromatin is observed with frequencies varying from 0.05 to 0.02. In these cases the abnormal structures are associated with salivary band 10A1 · 2, forming a band-like structure, frequently an almost perfect doublet (open or closed), often lying in an abnormal position, and with fine chromatin threads connecting to the chromosomal doublet. In stocks with v+ transformations mapping at 1∓0.0, apparent extra chromatin is observed with a frequency of about 0.001. These abnormal structures are frequently thread-like, lying to the side or off the tip of the chromosome, with compact regions which sometimes resemble chromomeres, and with fine threads connecting to the chromosomal 1B11 region.

Notes: Summary Drosophila embryos of v; bw constitution were injected with purified v +; bw+ (allo-) and v; bw (iso-) DNA solutions. Flies with partial formation of brown pigment were recovered from both kinds of DNA injections, and several stocks were successfully established. Six allo-DNA induced stocks and their progeny have the following characteristics: (1) an initial period of unstable transmission of the “information” for the altered phenotype; (2) expression of the altered phenotype is intermediate; (3) the level of phenotypic expression varies from fly to fly within a stock; (4) no dark brown (v +; bw) or bright red (v; bw +) phenotypes were found in the progeny of the experimental embryos; (5) the “information” for the altered phenotype is frequently lost during gamete formation; (6) duplications of chromosomal segments including the band in a polytene chromosome corresponding to the vermilion (v) gene are observed in two stocks. Ten iso-DNA induced stocks and their progeny have the following characteristics: (1) there is no unstable period; (2) expression of the altered phenotype is intermediate; (3) in some stocks the level of expression varies from individual to individual but others show a uniform phenotype; (4) no dark brown or birght red phenotypes were found in the progeny of the experimental embryos; (5) the “information” for the altered phenotype is stably trasmitted through all gametes of a phenotypically altered fly. These results suggest that the altered phenotype in some stocks derived from allo-DNA injected embryos may have been obtained from gene transfer at the v locus, whereas the remaining stocks, both allo- and iso-DNA induced, are likely to be DNA induced mutations.

Notes: Abstract The A-15 phase of chemically vapor-deposited Nb3Ge has been investigated by annealing techniques in the temperature range 700–1450°C and by irradiation with high-energy neutrons (E〉1 MeV). By x-ray diffraction analysis the samples were found to contain about 55 wt % of the A-15 phase, 35 wt % of tetragonal Nb5Ge3, and minor amounts of NbO2, NbO, and hexagonal Nb5Ge3. The superconducting transition temperatureT c and lattice parametera 0 of the A-15 phase have been measured as a function of annealing temperature and neutron irradiation.T c for the unirradiated sample remained above 19 K for long-term anneals in the temperature range 700–1000°C but decreased rapidly above 1000°C, reaching a limiting value of about 6 K at 1250°C, compared to the as-deposited value of about 20 K. The decrease inT c was accompanied by an increase ina 0 and an increase in the amount of tetragonal Nb5Ge3 to about 50 wt %. The observed decrease inT c was irreversible in that subsequent annealing at 1100°C did not result in any increase inT c or decrease ina 0 . Large depressions inT c were also observed in a sample irradiated with high-energy neutrons. The sample having aT c of about 21 K was found to exhibit no superconductivity to 1.5 K after exposure to a fluence of ∼5×1019 n/cm2. An increase ina 0 was also found as a function of neutron irradiation. However, in this case the effects were reversible in thatT c anda 0 of the irradiated sample could be restored to close to their original values by annealing in the 800–900°C range. The results are discussed in terms of stability of the A-15 phase and the effect of site-exchange disorder and composition on the superconducting properties and lattice parameters. It is concluded that the stoichiometric composition is metastable and upon annealing transforms to a stable, Nb-rich A-15 phase containing about 83 at % Nb with aT c of ∼6 K accompanied by precipitation of tetragonal Nb5Ge3.

Description: Global atmospheric and oceanic circulation effects of expansion of continental ice sheets initiated upwelling in the western equatorial Pacific and simultaneously intensified upwelling in the eastern equatorial Pacific; contraction of the ice sheets reversed the process. Published Pleistocene paleoclimatic stratigraphies correlated across the entire equatorial Pacific exhibit eight such cycles in the Brünhes epoch. The extrapolated chronostratigraphies for the equatorial Pacific compare favorably with published paleoclimatic schemes for the southeastern, eastern, and northern Pacific Ocean. The Southern Ocean record exhibits fewer, and possibly also consistently older, climatic variations. A time progression or lack of synchrony of marine Pleistocene climatic events is not inconsistent with modified “Milankovitch” hypotheses, such as that involving Antarctic ice-sheet instability.
