Notes: The crystal structure of monoclinic FeCl2.2H2O (F) has been refined using single-crystal data. The metamagnetic behaviour of F and CoCl2. 2H2O (C) has been determined on the basis of single-crystal measurements. At T = 4.2 K the reflexions of the antiferromagnetic zero-field phases disappear when a magnetic field of Hc1(F) = 39 kOe [Hc1(C) = 31.8 kOe] is applied along the direction of sublattice magnetization. In both salts the intermediate-field phase is collinear with a unit cell in which the a axis is tripled. This configuration vanishes at Hc2(F) = 46 kOe [Hc2(C) = 46 kOe] when the magnetically saturated configuration is reached. The three phases meet at a triple point at TT(F) = 11.7 K and HT(F) = 42.0 kOe [TT(C) = 8.9 K and HT(C) = 37.5 kOe]. Two types of phase transitions and tricritical points have been detected between the different configurations.

Notes: Abstract One-particle-inclusive measurements have been performed for the charge, kinetic energy and angular distributions of reaction products from238U +238U at 1 766MeV (7.42MeV/u) incident energy. The deep inelastic products exhibit features similar to those seen in reactions induced by medium heavy nuclei: increasing particle transfer is observed with increasing energy damping, the angular distributions are peaked near the grazing angle, they broaden significantly with increasing energy loss and/or charge transfer. The dominant reaction mechanism, however, is found to be sequential fission of one or both primary reaction products. The reconstructed primaryZ- andQ-value distributions show more particle transfer at a given energy loss than in other systems, i.e. the diffusion process seems to proceed colder in this system. This is confirmed by relatively large cross sections for surviving deep inelastic reaction products belowZ=92. A direct search forα-decay or fission of superheavy nuclei being produced in a deep inelastic reaction and being implanted in a surface barrier detector resulted in an upper cross section limit of 2 ×10−32cm2.

Notes: Abstract This is a report on a new method of measuring cross sections for the collision induced population transfer between single Na — 3p 2 P fine structure Zeeman states. The experiments are done for the five inert gases at the magnetic field strengths of 6, 17, 24, and 51 kOe. From the optically excited2 P 3/2,±3/2 and2 P 1/2,±1/2 states, respectively, the transfer to the other Zeeman states is studied. The method allows the determination of cross sections for which the influence of the magnetic field is cancelled and which render possible the calculation of cross sections for the transfer and the relaxation of all2 P density tensor components of the degreek=1, 2, and 3. The comparison with previous theoretical and experimental results gives satisfactory agreement. As an application the six Grawert parameters are deduced for the inert gases.

Notes: Abstract Angular distributions of the proton and neutron transfer reactions14C(16O,15N)15N and14C(16O,17O)13C leading to the ground states of the final nuclei were measured atE lab=20, 25 and 30 MeV. A DWBA analysis was performed using the no-recoil approximation of Buttle and Goldfarb. All angular distributions, including the pronounced structures of the proton transfer arising from the fact that the final nuclei are identical, are well reproduced. The spectroscopic factor for the neutron transfer is in agreement with shell model calculations whereas the proton transfer into aj 〈-state yields a value which is too high. Exact finite-range calculations do not show this discrepancy, indicating that recoil effects are important even for light targets and lower energies. Contributions of the nonnormall-transfer, however, are small.

Notes: Abstract By photon absorption from a monomode dye-laser beam a spatially ordered velocity distribution (‘atomic beam’) of sodium atoms excited to the 3p 2 P 1/2-state, is created. It is predicted theoretically that in collisions of these atoms with atoms of a heavy foreign gas an alignment of the electronic orbital angular momentum is produced. This alignment leads to the appearance of a linear polarization in the sensitizedD 2-fluorescent light. This polarization is verified experimentally and interpreted in terms of a simplifiedT-operator. It turns out that the scattering distribution for sensitizing collision is of the wide-angle type.

Notes: Abstract Mass andZ-distributions of fusion products from the reaction 5.8 MeV/u46Ti+12C were measured in the angular range betweenθ lab=1.5° and 8° using a time-of-flightΔE−E telescope. The results are compared with an earlier measurement of the reaction32 S+26Mg, in which the same compound nucleus was produced at higher excitation energy. The residual nuclide distributions are interpreted with the aid of evaporation calculations and the influence of shell effects in the level densities is discussed. The data are consistent with the assumption that the shell effects vanish above 15 to 20 MeV excitation energy, that is, that they are essentially only important for the last evaporation step.

Notes: Abstract We present data for the132Xe+56Fe-system at 5.73 MeV/u laboratory energy. Due to inverted kinematics, where Xe is the projectile, we were able to measure energy spectra as well as angular distributions for reaction products with 20≦Z≦60 with unitZ-resolution; i.e. target- and projectile-like fragments have been investigated. The reaction shows a well focussed quasielastic component, where charge transfer from the light to the heavy collision partner dominates. This apparent tendency towards more asymmetric fragmentation is explained by a potential energy surface which favours such charge transfer in order to minimize the asymmetry energy of the liquid drop. The strongly damped component which constitutes the major part of the reaction cross section exhibits characteristics of a fusion-fission reaction with typical fission fragment kinetic energies and 1/sinΘ c.m. angular distributions. The maximum cross section is found for the symmetric fragmentation, no clear indication is observed for a diffusion process leading to target- and projectile-like fragments. Our data are difficult to reconcile either with the standard diffusion models or with an equilibrated compound nucleus fission picture. We tentatively conclude that an essential part of the fully damped cross section originates from partial waves for which the compound nucleus has no fission barrier.

Notes: Abstract Byγ- e K − ande K − -γ TDPAC measurements with the 133 keV–482 keV cascade of181Ta in a polycrystalline beryllium matrix theA 2(e K − )-coefficient of the 482 keV transition was determined as: A2(482e K − )=−0.095±0.015. The theoretical value is 6.0 times larger. A remeasurement of the E2/M1 mixing ratio of the same transition by integralγ- γ angular correlation measurements with a system of three 20 ccm Ge(Li)-detectors gave the result:δ(482)=4.96±0.25. Theα K -coefficient was redetermined as:α K (482)=0.0246±0.0018. From these data the penetration parameter:λ=157±11 is derived and compared with previously published values and theoretical estimates.

Notes: Abstract The bulk recombination coefficients for linear recombination via recombination centers as well as for direct recombination have been determined measuring the conductivity decay after two-photon absorption with a CO2 laser. The Suhl effect was applied to measure the surface recombination velocity. The corresponding literature is discussed and compared with our results. We conclude that two different kinds of recombination centers are possible inn-InSb, with energy levels (0.1–0.12) eV above the valence band, or (0.14–0.2) eV respectively.
