    Notes: : The Conservation Areas in South Florida have been considered as one of the major water storage areas to provide a water supply for the Everglades National Park and Lower East Coast (LEC). Due to the increasing water demands of the area, additional backpumping of the surplus runoff from the LEC area into the Conservation Areas has been considered as one of several alternative plans. The Receiving Water Quantity (EPA, 1971) model has been adapted and modified to be applicable in the Conservation Areas to investigate the possible impact of additional inflow under various backpumping cases. The modification of the model included Manning's roughness coefficient, depth of flow, width of hypothetical channels through marsh areas, rainfall input, seepage rate, etc. The use of the Monte Carlo technique for area computations was found to be easy and time saving both in area and weighting rainfall input to each node. Comparison of results generated by this modified model with the recorded values in Conservation Areas 1 and 2A indicated that the model not only can be a very good evaluation tool to simulate the hydraulic regime of the Conservation Areas system but also a proper tool for investigating the impact of additional inflow resulting from the backpumping related to the water use planning and management.

    Notes: : As part of a comprehensive water quality investigation on the Fox Chain of Lakes during May to October 1975, water samples from the Chain and Cedar Lake (reference) at 25 locations were collected weekly or bi-weekly to determine the species and densities of algae. The results have been evaluated for algal composition, density, and succession for each location.Sixty-four algal species were recovered from 414 samples. The number of species per sampling location varied from 10 at Channel Lake and Lake Marie to 26 on Fox Lake (main) and Grass Lake. Blue green algae were predominant and occurred at 25 of the 25 sampling stations. They consisted mainly of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. The only flagellate of importance was Ceratium hirundinella, and significant concentrations of this organism were limited to Channel Lake and Lake Catherine. The only green alga bloom was created by Ulothrix variabilis on the waters of Pistakee Lake. Diatoms were quite significant on the shallower water bodies.Algal densities ranged from about 25 to 14,000 cts/ml. The highest count occurred on Mineola Bay. Other high counts (〉10,000 cts/ml) observed were waters taken from Channel Lake, Grass Lake, and Fox Lake (main). In Grass Lake, 60 percent of the collections had algal densities in excess of 2,000 cts/ml. Most of these were the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana.

    Notes: Abstract Diffusion problem with variabale diffusion coefficient in a spherical biological system is investigated. Also included in this study is the biological reaction of the Michaelis-Menten type. The problem formulated consists of a highly nonlinear differential equation which, however, can be efficiently solved by the orthogonal collocation method on a digital computer. The effects of the dimensionless governing parameters on the transient and steady state concentration responses are parametrically examined for the diffusion system with and without biological reaction.

    Notes: Abstract The steady state distribution of oxygen tension in thein vivo cornea is estimated in the present study by using a nonlinear oxygen consumption rate equation of the Michaelis-Menten type. Such a rate expression is more accurate than the previous simplified versions in predicting the oxygen consumption rate. It is found that for an open eye with or without contact lens, the oxygen tensions predicted previously are in good agreement with these predicted in the present work. However, for a closed eye with or without contact lens, the previous predictions underestimate the oxygen tension.

    Notes: Abstract Particle deposition in a tube with laminar flow is investigated. An analytical procedure is developed for predicting the particle deposition efficiency by incorporating the velocity of thermophoresis in the equation of conservation of particles. Effects of important parameters, such as temperature difference between the inlet gas and the tube wall, particle size and the Lewis number, on the particle precipitation efficiency are examined. Also considered in this work is the assumption of constant temperature gradient as a limiting case. It is found that particle precipitation efficiency predicted by using constant temperature gradient is much optimistic.

    Notes: Abstract The nonisothermal non-Newtonian chemical reactions in a tubular reactor are investigated. The non-Newtonian fluid is assumed to be characterized by the Ostwald-de Waele power-law model, which represents the majority of laminar flow of food products and many polymer melts and solutions. The temperature effect on the viscosity is considered and is found to be very significant. The effects of other important dimensionless parameters on the reactor performances are examined.
