Description: Measurements of the vortex system behind a T-33 aircraft were obtained by a Learjet equipped with a boom carrying a three-wire, hot-wire anemometry probe and other instrumentation. Analysis of the measurements using a computerized geometric method indicated the vortices had a core radius of approximately 0.11 meter with a maximum velocity of 25 meters per second. The hot-wire anemometer was found to be a practical and sensitive instrument for determining in-flight vortex velocities. No longitudinal instabilities, buoyant effects or vortex breakdowns were evident in the data which included vortex wake cross sections from 0.24 to 5.22 kilometers behind the T-33.

Description: The results of a study directed toward compilation of a theoretical and experimental data base covering inlet/airframe and nozzle/afterbody integration are described, with the major emphasis on the evaluation of the adequacy for preliminary design purposes of the data base for afterbody/propulsion system interference effects. Prediction methods that exist for afterbody/airframe interference effects are evaluated with respect to the requirements of breadth, ease of application and accuracy that are important for preliminary design.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The time-dependent behaviour of the stress intensity factor in an inhomogeneous medium, composed of two different elastic layers, is determined. It is supposed that a semi-infinite crack suddenly appears at the interface of the layers. The problem leads to a system of two Wiener-Hopf equations, which in the case of anti-plane state of strain can be reduced to one equation of the same type. The approximate factorization method used here allows to determine an exact value of the stress intensity factor within numerical accuracy of the inverse Laplace-transformation. The influence of different elastic constants ratios and different thicknesses of the layers is illustrated by means of diagrams.
