Abstract The anomalous Hall coefficient is calculated for rare earth ions in cubic matrices, including crystal field effects and virtual boundd states associated with the rare earth ions. The results suggest that the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient should follow the ionic susceptibility and thus be sensitive to modifications in temperature dependence of the susceptibility due to crystal field effects. The validity of this result is tested using available results for rare earths in noble metal hosts.
