Summary Because direct selection for ploidy level based on chromosome counts is very laborious, investigations on the possibilities of indirect selection were made with C0 and C1 lettuce plants. It appeared that stomatal length of C1 plants could serve as a reliable criterion for indirect selection on ploidy level. The value for stomatal length at which selection is effective, depends on the frequency of diploid and tetraploid plants in the basic population. Other characters like stomatal frequency, pollen grain length and size of flower heads appear little if at all suitable as such a criterion.
