Abstract Upconversion of low-level ir radiation at 3.39 μm to the near ultraviolet at 330.5 nm has been obtained using the resonantly enhanced third-order nonlinearity of Na atoms. This enhancement has been achieved by two-photon resonant pumping of the nonallowed Na 3s–5s transition with a dye-laser radiation at 602.4 nm. Self-phase-matching has been observed.
