    Description: The primary objectives of the earth observations and photography experiment of the Apollo Soyuz Test Project were to photograph various terrestrial structures and to use the capabilities of man as a trained observer in visually studying earth features and phenomena. Man's special capabilities include the sensitivity of the eye to subtle color variations and the speed with which the eye/brain system can interpret what is seen and select targets for photography. Real time astronaut observations constitute a useful complement to orbital photographs and greatly aid in their interpretation. Targets for mapping and hand held photography were selected on the basis of their value to specialists in the earth sciences including geology, oceanography, desert study, hydrology, meteorology, and environmental science.

    Description: A one-dimensional X-ray telescope of the Kirkpatrick-Baez design is described. The instrument consists of a grazing-incidence X-ray telescope and a multiwire proportional counter. The optics were provided with a gold reflecting surface to yield an energy response from below 0.25 to above 4.0 keV. The angular resolution of the system is 6 min by 9.5 deg over a 1.1 deg by 9.5 deg field of view.

    Description: Synoptic observations of the temporal power spectrum of interplanetary scintillations were made in the summer of 1976 on the University of Iowa's Cocoa Cross radio telescope and the University of Maryland's TPT array. Most of the observations were at large (larger than 40 deg) solar elongations. It was found that the power spectrum broadens when enhanced turbulence at the front of a high-speed solar wind stream sweeps over the earth. In the case with sufficient synoptic coverage, the broadening appeared to result from the relative closeness of the enhanced scattering region rather than from an increase in velocity. A small percentage of the spectra displayed two power law components with a plateau between them. These may result from a flattening in the spatial turbulence spectrum such as has been observed by spacecraft.

    Description: A simplified analytical technique is presented for modeling the interplanetary scintillation of radio sources of finite angular size with a power-law electron-density-fluctuation power spectrum. The simplification results from the representation of the scintillation spectrum in confluent hypergeometric functions. The approximations presented allow fast numerical evaluation of a spectrum for a weakly scattering but extended medium with less than 10% error over the entire spectrum. Parameters describing anisotropic electron irregularities as well as anisotropic source structure are included, and the dependence of the spectrum normalization on the scales of the medium is derived explicitly. The parametric description of the domains of convergence of the approximate expansions also provides a simple conceptualization of the relative contributions of the scattered radiation along the line of sight to the observed spectrum. This is particularly useful for sources of finite angular size. This technique is applied to previously published observations.

    Description: Physical and electrical parameters for the 34.3-MHz Cocoa Cross radio telescope are given. The telescope is dedicated to the determination of solar-wind characteristics in and out of the ecliptic plane through measurement of electron-density irregularity structure as determined from IPS (interplanetary scintillation) of natural radio sources. The collecting area (72,000 sq m), angular resolution (0.4 deg EW by 0.6 deg NS), and spatial extent (1.3 km EW by 0.8 km NS) make the telescope well suited for measurements of IPS index and frequency scale for hundreds of weak radio sources without serious confusion effects.

    Description: A position-sensitive proportional counter capable of imaging X-rays (0.1-3 keV) over a 10 cm x 10 cm aperture has been constructed. Positioning is obtained by sensing the signals induced by an X-ray event on the two orthogonal sets of cathode wires. Each cathode is divided into a series of cathode strips, each 0.5 cm wide. An X-ray event induces signals on several adjacent strips. Signals from each cathode strip are amplified separately and then added in an equally weighted and an unequally weighted summing amplifier. The position in each direction is obtained by dividing the output of the unequally weighted summer by that of the equally weighted summer. At 0.94 keV, the accuracy of the position sensing is 190 microns. At the same energy, the energy resolution is approximately 65% (FWHM). The proportional counter system is currently being incorporated into a sounding rocket payload having metal mirror optics, which is being constructed by the X-ray astronomy group at the California Institute of Technology.

    Description: The relation of the coronal magnetic field structure to the distribution of approximately 1 MeV protons in interplanetary space between 1 and 5 AU is discussed. After ordering the interplanetary data by its estimated coronal emission source location in heliographic coordinates, the multispacecraft measured proton fluxes are compared with coronal magnetic field structure infrared as observed in soft X-ray photographs and potential field calculations. Evidence for the propagation and possible acceleration of solar flare protons on high magnetic loop structure in the corona is presented. Further, it is shown that corotating proton flux enhancements are associated with regions of low coronal X-ray emission (including coronal holes), usually in association with solar wind stream structure.

    Description: A radio telescope designed to exploit the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) technique and locate, map, and track solar wind disturbances which result in geomagnetic disturbances, thereby providing a forecast capability, is described. Preliminary results from operation of the telescope include: (1) evidence for a precursor signal in the IPS activity with a 1-2 day lead time with respect to density enhancements which frequently give rise to geomagnetic activity; (2) detection of a spectral broadening signature which also serves as a precursor of geomagnetic activity; (3) out-of-the-ecliptic plasma density enhancements which were not detected by near-Earth, ecliptic plane spacecraft; (4) detection of 12 corotating density enhancements;(5) detection of over 80 sources which give detectable scintillation of which 45 have been used for detailed synoptic analysis and 9 for spectral analysis; and (6) measurement of 0-lag coefficient of 0.56 between density and IPS activity enhancements.

    Description: The problems of developing large-area, gas-scintillation proportional counters with high resolution are considered. It is found that simple large-area, parallel-grid proportional counters suffer from a variation in gain over the counter window. Some success has been achieved in overcoming this problem by focusing the charge cloud as it drifts into the multiplication region. Measurements are reported for various mixtures of argon and xenon as well as pure xenon.

    Description: A plan has been developed to retrieve the HEAO-C spacecraft from orbit with the Space Shuttle in the early 1980s. The initial HEAO-C orbit altitude must be increased to provide additional lifetime. A simple passive stabilization mode, using gravity gradient and aerodynamic torques, is used for long-term storage. Most of the modifications required for Orbiter compatibility result from manned safety requirements and the structural mounting. There is a positive disconnect of all power before entering the Orbiter bay, and pressure vessels are monitored continuously. Structural equipment is added in the Orbiter bay to receive and stow the Observatory.
