Beschreibung: The Orion sword star 42 Ori is embedded in a nebula north of and separated from the Orion nebula. The B1 V star is probably normal. Other members of the multiple remain poorly defined, and the nebula may exhibit some peculiarities that may depend on them. Copernicus ultraviolet spectra of the star are described here, especially in the form of tables of wavelength identifications. The properties of the interstellar material in the line of sight are also discussed. Infrared photometry is presented which suggests that the ratio of total to selective extinction ranges from 3 to 3.5 for the interstellar matter in the direction of 42 Ori. The IR photometry provides no evidence for companion stellar or circumstellar components.

Beschreibung: The detection of a simultaneous optical and X-ray burst from MXB 1837 + 05 (4U 1837 + 04 = Ser X-1) is reported. A similar detection was made earlier from MXB 1735-44. These are the only two burst sources that have been optically observed (simultaneous with X-ray observations) at a high level of sensitivity. Therefore, it may well be that optical bursts commonly accompany X-ray bursts. The relative timing and flux ratio of the optical and X-ray bursts imply that the optical radiation is probably reemission from X-ray-heated matter within 1-2 light seconds of the X-ray source and no more than a few light seconds in extent. This matter may be in an accretion disk around the X-ray source or possibly in the atmosphere of a dwarf companion.

Beschreibung: Broad-band infrared photometric measurements have been gathered for 105 stars which exhibit diffuse interstellar bands in their spectra. All normal stars obey a single reddening law, and a value of R equal to 3.08 + or - 0.15 is derived. This value is consistent with other recent determinations of R. The diffuse band indicators, the central depth of the 4430-A feature and the equivalent widths of the 5780-A and 6284-A features, show as large a scatter with the infrared color excesses as they do with E(B - V). No single-valued relation between the color excesses and the diffuse band strengths appears to exist. This casts doubt on whether dust grains which produce the visual and infrared extinctions are the carriers for the diffuse interstellar features.
