Description: The first UV spectroscopic measurements of binary X-ray sources with IUE show highly variable emission from a photoionized plasma in the object HZ Her, and give evidence for localized circumsystem material in the binary source Cygnus X-1. In addition, a substantial stellar wind is found in one of the brightest identified X-ray sources HD153919. This system may be surrounded by an extensive H II region unusual in its content of high excitation ion species.

Description: Ultraviolet spectroscopic measurements of the M dwarf binary EQ Peg and the G8 V star Xi Boo A have been made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. High-temperature emission lines (N V, C IV, Si IV) are present with similar strengths in both stars. The surface fluxes of chromospheric and transition-region lines are enhanced relative to those of normal main-sequence stars and are comparable to those observed in solar active regions. If inhomogeneities are present, the surface fluxes may be markedly higher than the derived values. It is likely that the emission observed from EQ Peg was not the result of major flare activity; however, the quiescent radiative losses observed in the ultraviolet are comparable to the time-averaged optical flare losses. The similarity of the line emissions of active dwarfs of diverse spectral types suggests that the character of the transition region is independent of the stellar effective temperature.

Description: A 3D inviscid transonic analysis code was combined with a 2D strip integral boundary layer technique to form an approximate interaction procedure for analyzing the flow over a high aspect ratio wing near cruise conditions. Converged results obtained using the procedure for an aspect ratio 10.3 supercritical wing are discussed. Angle of attack adjustments were made during the iterative procedure in order to compensate for the viscous lift loss. A comparison of the calculations with experimental data is presented.

Description: Buckling studies were conducted on truncated 120 deg conical shells having large end rings and many interior reinforcing rings that are typical of aeroshells used as spacecraft decelerators. Changes in base-end-ring stiffness were accomplished by simply machining away a portion of the base ring between successive buckling tests. Initial imperfection measurements from the test cones were included in the analytical model.

Description: Three aluminum honeycomb sandwich conical shells with a 120 apex angle and a 4.6-m (15.0-ft) base diameter were loaded to failure by a uniform external pressure. The cones differed from one another only in the thickness of their respective face sheets. Test specimen details, test procedure, and test results are discussed. Both buckling and prebuckling data are compared with appropriate theoretical predictions, and good agreement was obtained between test and theory. Extensive imperfection measurements were made and reported on the three cones in the as fabricated condition.

Description: The instrumentation and data-reduction techniques used in the Celescope experiment conducted on board OAO-2 are reviewed. A brief summary is presented of the principles of UV astronomy, the Celescope optical package and bay E4 electronic module assembly are described, and the distribution of the Celescope pictures is plotted in galactic coordinates. Described data-reduction techniques include the determination of the U-B and B-V colors, removal of interstellar extinction effects, and construction of model atmospheres for the observed stars. Some difficulties and apparent contradictions encountered in the data interpretation are noted.

Description: Prior to the ASTP joint flight it was observed during various tests on the USA's VHF/FM system, that the 121.75 MHz receiver unsquelched when exposed to certain RF power levels at a frequency of 142.417 MHz. Tests were conducted in an effort to arrive at a solution. Several recommendations were made but the most feasible was to insert a selective band pass filter in the transmit/receiver line of the VHF/FM transceiver. The tests were performed on the filter to determine the frequency response and rejection capabilities at 142.417 MHz.

Description: A user's manual is presented for a computer program which calculates inviscid flow about lifting configurations in the free-stream Mach-number range from zero to low supersonic. Angles of attack of the order of the configuration thickness-length ratio and less can be calculated. An approximate formulation was used which accounts for shock waves, leading-edge separation and wind-tunnel wall effects.

Description: The ATS-6/Command Service Module Training Console houses, controls, and cools telecommunication subsystems during support of ASTP test programs. The function of each switch on the power control and mode control panels is described along with the input functions on the stimulus input panel. The switch settings for each mode of operation are presented.

Description: IUE short wavelength (1150-2000 A) spectra of late-type dwarfs, giant, and supergiant stars show a variety of emission features varying in excitation from about 10,000 K to about 3 x 10 to the 5th K. High excitation species are found most strongly in main sequence stars. Dwarf stars with active chromospheres (e.g., Xi Boo) and flare stars (EQ Peg) show enhancement of surface flux as compared to the quiet sun; binary systems of W UMa and RS CVn types show even larger surface fluxes. The enhancement increases with temperature of formation much like a solar active region. The presence of high excitation species in the giant and supergiant stars suggests that parameters other than effective temperature and luminosity are important in establishing a transition region and corona.
