    A remote sensing laser fluorometer (1975)

    Description: A sensor is reported which is able to identify certain specific substances in water by means of their fluorescence spectra. In particular, the sensor detects oil, ligninsulfonates and chlorophyll. The device is able to measure the fluorescence spectra of water at ranges up to 75 m and to detect oil spills on water at altitudes up to 300 m. Blue light from a laser is used to excite the fluorescence of the target. Any light from the ambient background illumination, from the reflected laser light or from the induced fluorescence is gathered by a small telescope focused on the target. Optical filters are used to block the reflected laser light and to select the wavelengths of interest in the fluorescence spectrum of the target. The remaining light is detected with a photomultiplier tube. The amplitude of the laser induced fluorescence in the wavelength interval selected by the optical filters is displayed on a meter or strip chart recorder.

    Notes: α-Substituted Phosphonates. XXXI. The Reaction of N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyl Chloroformamidinium Chloride with P(III) CompoundsN,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyl chloroformamidiniumchloride (4) does not react with triethyl phosphite (TEP) or isopropyl diphenylphosphinate to give the expected bisphosphoryl derivatives 7 and 11, respectively, but primarily the monophosphorylated amidinium salts 6 and 10 respectively. The phosphine oxide 10 is stable, while 6 undergoes an elimination of ethyl chloride to the betain 8. Even under more drastic conditions the reaction of 4 or 8 with TEP does not lead to the expected bis(dimethylamino)bisphosphonate 7, but to the monoaminated bisphosphonate 1, involving a reduction step. Similar reduction has been observed under mild conditions in Michaelis-Arbusov reaction of dichloromethylenimonium chloride, yielding the expected trisphosphonate 2 and the bisphosphonate 1 as a by-product.

Synthesis of Tris-(o-phenylenedioxy)-phosphorate(V)The structure of an orthophosphate which had been supposed earlier to represent type 1, has been proven to be a compound having only one P-nucleus in the molecule, with a penta(4) resp. hexacoordinated (5) structure depending on the solvent. The triethyl-ammonium salt 8 of this first example of a hexacoordinated phosphoric acid with 6 P—O-bonds (5) is formed simply from tri- als well as from tetra- and pentacoordinated derivatives of phosphorous resp. phosphoric or thiophosphoric acid.
    Notes: Die Struktur eines früher als 1 angesehenen Orthophosphorsäureesters erwies sich als einkernige Phosphorverbindung, die in Abhängigkeit vom Lösungsmittel in penta-(4) bzw. hexacoordinierter (5) Form vorliegt. Das Triäthylammoniumsalz 8 dieser ersten hexacoordinierten Phosphorsäure mit sechs P—O-Bindungen 5 ist überraschend leicht aus tri-, tetra- und pentacoordinierten Verbindungen der phosphorigen bzw. Phosphorsäure oder Thiophosphorsäure zugänglich.

Esterification and N-Formylation of α-Aminomethane-bisphosphonic Acids with TriethylorthoformateIn contrast to simple mono- and bisphosphonic acids esterification of dialkylaminomethanebisphosphonic acids with orthoformate (OAE) proceeds very slowly. Monoalkyl and monoarylaminomethanebisphosphonic acids, respectively react with OAE in constrast to analogous hydroxy compounds more readily primarily by formylating the N-atom and then esterification to formyl aminomethane bisphosphonictetraesters 10. Acetaminomethanephosphonic acid (12) reacts without N-formylation, while the aminomethanebisphosphonic acid (14) reacted to give a mixture of mono- and bis-formylated products 15 and 16. By acidic hydrolysis of 10 the ester- and formylgroups are splitt off, while the ester group can selectively be removed by reaction with Me3SiBr/H2O. - As shown by 1H-, 13C- and 31P-n.m.r. spectroscopy the phosphorylated formamides 10 exists in two rotameres, the ratio depending on the solvent. The n.m.r. signals could be correlated to E-resp. Z-form undoubtedly by using shift-agents or the benzene-diluting technique. A rotational barrier of 22,8 kcal for 10c could be calculated.

    Notes: Orthosäurechloride reagieren mit Äthylenoxid je nach Struktur entweder zu Orthosäure-β-chloräthylester oder unter Abspaltung von 1,2-Dichloräthan zu den entsprechenden Carbonyl-bzw. Phosphorylderivaten. Auf diesem Weg sind unter anderem pentacovalente P-Verbindungen (Pentaoxyphosphorane 14, 16) zugänglich.
