    Notes: The high-resolution carbon-13 NMR spectrum of hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) with about 2.5 moles of ethylene oxide (MS 2.5) average substitution per anhydroglucose ring (AHG) is presented. From models, the CMR chemical shifts for all of the different carbon atoms are assigned. Direct measurement of the relative intensities of the CMR signals for certain carbon atoms in HEC permits rapid and accurate computation of (1) the average chain length of poly(ethylene oxide); (2) the degree of substitution of ethylene oxide, and (3) the average relative degree of substitution of the alcohol groups on the AHG ring.

    Notes: Circular dichroic studies of a desmosine crosslinked peptide reveal a hitherto undescribed elastin spectrum possessing a weak negative band at 230-235 nm, a weak positive band at 215 nm, and a maximum negative band at 190 nm. The spectrum is sensitive to both pH and temperature displaying increased ellipticity of the 215-nm band at acidic pH and low temperature. The general shape of the spectrum and its behaviour toward temperature changes suggest the presence of an extended helical conformation. Susceptibility of insoluble elastin to digestion with chymotrypsin is increased tenfold at low temperature (4°C), supporting the contention that the conformational change of the type described above occurs in insoluble elastin. Such changes in conformation would result in increased availability of aromatic amino-acid resiudues to peptide bond cleavage.

    Notes: Dogs were dialyzed with collagen and cuprophane membranes, human renal failure patients were dialyzed with cuprophane membranes, and samples of the membranes were observed by scanning electron microscopy at different time periods. Fixation was done in glutaraldehyde and cacodylate buffer, and samples were dried at the critical point. All cellular elements were well preserved and appeared viable. Cuprophane adsorbed platelets almost selectively in dog dialyses, whereas collagen adsorbed a smaller number and more heterogeneous group of cells. In contrast to these findings, when cuprophane was used in clinical dialyses, the cell population was predominantly polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

    Notes: The Smoluchowski formalism is used to solve the problem of a bead of frictional resistance β attached to a surface with a spring of force constant k over which a linear shear field of strenght α flows. The power dissipation is given by βα2kT/k. k and T have their usual meanings. The result is generalized to an n-bead polymer. It is found that the power dissipation of a Rouse model polymer attached to a surface at one end is twice that of an identical polymer flowing freely in solution. If the force constant k arises from an entropy force, then, because of the effect of the surface on the number of polymer configurations, there is an additional factor of two. The same relationship is expected to also hold for the frequency-dependent power dissipation. It is argued that a net circulation exists in the beads above the surface and that the magnitude of the circulation is roughly comparable to that which exists in a polymer freely rotating in solution under a shear field of the same magnitude.

    Description: A cubic spline approximation is used for the solution of several problems in fluid mechanics. This procedure provides a high degree of accuracy even with a nonuniform mesh, and leads to a more accurate treatment of derivative boundary conditions. The truncation errors and stability limitations of several typical integration schemes are presented. For two-dimensional flows a spline-alternating-direction-implicit (SADI) method is evaluated. The spline procedure is assessed and results are presented for the one-dimensional nonlinear Burgers' equation, as well as the two-dimensional diffusion equation and the vorticity-stream function system describing the viscous flow in a driven cavity. Comparisons are made with analytic solutions for the first two problems and with finite-difference calculations for the cavity flow.

    Description: A coupled strongly implicit method is combined with a deferred-corrector spline solver for the vorticity-stream function form of the Navier-Stokes equation. Solutions for cavity, channel and cylinder flows are obtained with the fourth-order spline 4 procedure. The strongly coupled spline corrector method converges as rapidly as the finite difference calculations and also allows for arbitrary large time increments for the Reynolds numbers considered. In some cases fourth-order smoothing or filtering is required in order to suppress high frequency oscillations.
