Description / Table of Contents: Composite tubes with high corrosion resistance at high temperaturesThis paper describes studies on the compatibility of alloys used in composite tubes exposed to 600-800 °C. The alloys were chosen on the basis that one (ironrich, clad alloy) has good high temperature strength and the other (nickel-chromium cladding) has good high temperature corrosion resistance. The interdiffusion of elements from one alloy to the other has been studied using the microprobe analyser. The interdiffusion of major alloy elements (e.g. iron) is affected both by the chromium content of the cladding and the zirconium content (added to improve hot workability). The diffusion of carbon from the clad alloy into the cladding is controlled by the identity of the carbide forming elements in the clad material. The mechanism of these compositional effects is discussed.

Notes: The corrosion behaviour of a binary Ni-15 Cr alloy and a ternary Ni-15 Cr'1 Zr alloy has been examined when exposed to a bioxidant O2:SO2 atmosphere at 850°C. The patterns of scaling exhibited by the two alloys, especially in the early stages of reaction, have been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy and EDAX analysis. It has been established that the nucleation of Cr2 O3 on, and its subsequent growth over the sample surface was much more rapid with the ternary alloy than the binary material. Furthermore the steady-state scale formed on the ternary alloy was single-layered and contained no NiO, in contrast to the anticipated duplex-layered scale developed on the binary material. It is suggested that the pre-existing intermetallic network in the as-cast microstructure of the Ni-15 Cr-1 Zr alloy is a key factor in promoting the rapid formation of the thin protective layer of Cr2O3, free from NiO. These features are responsible for the reduced rate of corrosion of the Zr'bearing material, relative to that exhibited by the binary alloy. The observations are discussed in the light of the published literature concerning the effects of rare earth/reactive metal and inert oxide additions to chromia-forming alloy systems.

Notes: A new relationship has been found for the Newtonian viscosity of polymeric melts as a function of temperature and of chemical structure of the polymer unit. The viscosity-temperature correlation is expressed graphically. The activation energy of viscous flow at high temperatures can be derived from a newly found additive property, viz. the molar viscosity-temperature function.

Notes: The rheology of concentrated polymer solutions shows a remarkable correspondence with that of polymer melts, but is more complicated due to a new parameter: the concentration of the polymer. The literature shows evidence that the viscosity of concentrated solutions is roughly proportional to the 5th power of the polymer concentration. The effects of concentration and temperature on the viscosity of polymer solutions, however, cannot be treated separately, since they are interrelated. The solvent has a dual effect on the polymer: it decreases the glass transition temperature and hence lowers the activation energy of viscous flow. Furthermore the solvent exerts a real dilution effect, causing the viscosity to fall between that of a polymer melt and that of the pure solvent at the temperature concerned.

Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) containing hexabromobenzene, tricresyl phosphate, or a combination of triphenyl phosphate and hexabromobenzene, pentabromotoluene, or octabromobiphenyl was extruded or spun at 280°C into monofilaments or low-denier yarn, respectively. Only combinations of the phosphorus- and halogen-containing compounds resulted in flame-retardant poly(ethylene terephthalate) systems, without depreciating their degree of luster and color quality. The melting temperature, the reduced viscosity, and the thermal stability above 400°C of these flame-retardant systems were in most cases comparable to those of poly(ethylene terephthalate) itself. Phosphorus-bromine synergism was proposed with flame inhibition occurring mostly in the gas phase.

Notes: Physical and mechanical properties of alpha-methylstyrene-methacrylonitrile copolymer have been determined. The effects of copolymer composition and inherent viscosity (molecular weight) on deflection temperature under load, Izod impact strength, tensile, and flexural properties are reported. The azeotropic copolymer of 57 mole-% methacrylonitrile possessed the best overall properties with a DTUL of 129°C and an Izod impact strength of 0.3 ft-lb/in. notch. The impact strength of the copolymer was improved by graft copolymerization upon a butadiene-methacrylonitrile copolymer. The impact-modified copolymer possessed an Izod impact strength of 6 ft-lb/in. notch and a DTUL of 115°C.

Notes: Processing behavior of alpha-methylstyrene-methacrylonitrile copolymer has been studied in a Brabender Plasticorder and in a capillary rheometer. The copolymer is thermally unstable at a processing temperature of 230°C; however, addition of 2% ethyl acrylate to the copolymer composition enhances processing stability. The terpolymer is processable in the range of 210° to 250°C. However, it is limited by melt fracture at low shear rates.
