Notes: A variety of diploid human fibroblast lines have been successfully grown to high densities (〉106 cell/ml) on recently developed microcarriers. Interferon induction using poly I·poly C and a superinduction procedure resulted in yields greater than 10,000 units/ml with one cell line. A direct comparison of microcarrier cultures to roller bottle cultures showed equivalent interferon yields on a per cell basis and some apparent differences relating to optimum inducer concentrations and kinetics of interferon accumulation.

Notes: A preliminary cost estimate was made for two fermentation processes that increase the feed value of grass straw. In one method, straw hydrolyzed with dilute sulfuric acid is fermented by yeast. In the second method, the straw is treated with alkali, then inoculated with cellulolytic bacteria. Both processes increase the digestibility, protein content, and fat content of straw. Production costs estimated for plants processing 100 tons of straw/day by the two methods, were 80 to 88 dollars/ton. Capital costs were estimated at 5.2 million dollars for the acidhydrolysis yeast-fermentation process and at 3.1 million dollars for the alkalicellulolytic bacteria process. Labor, capital, and energy were significant cost factors for both processes. Caustic costs were important in the alkaline-treatment cellulolytic bacteria process.

Notes: Oxygen transfer measurements using a dynamic method and evaluated with an appropriate mathematical model have been made on a tubular loop bioreactor. Correlations of the type used in tank systems are used to describe the influence of power and aeration rate on the mass transfer coefficient. Yeast cultures grown on hydrocarbon and glucose substrates show growth characteristics similar to conventional tank results. Model considerations for large-scale tubular fermentors allow for the prediction of the steady-state oxygen profiles and maximum reactor length. Combination with two-phase flow and oxygen transfer correlations yields a design procedure for commercial scale tubular loop fermentors.

Notes: Ten chitosan products were manufactured from dry shrimp hulls under differing process conditions and compared to a commercially available product. Manufacturing variables tested were: alkali versus enzymatic deproteination; acid demineralization versus no treatment; air versus nitrogen atmosphere; 5 min vs. 15 min deacetylation period: and varying the particle size of the dry starting material. Deproteination by alkali of enzymatic extraction did not substantially affect the nitrogen and ash compositions of dry chitosan samples. However, the viscosity was reduced in samples deproteinated by enzymatic hydrolysis. Elimination of the demineralization step resulted in products having 31-36% ash, as expected. Some differences in viscosity were observed between deminiralized and undemineralized samples, but on important differences in the molecular-weight distribution of these samples were evident. Purging the reaction vessel with nitrogen resulted in chitosan preparations having higher viscosities and molecular-weight distributions than those prepared in an air atmosphere. The degradative effect of air became more proshrimp hulls to 1 mm prior to any treatment resulted in a chitosan product of both higher viscosity and molecular weight than when ground to either 2 or 6.4 mm. Viscosity was not always a direct indicator of molecular weight, for although the presence of colloidal particles increased the viscosity of some samples, the molecular-weight distribution after filtration was essentially the same as in other less viscous samples.

Notes: The apparent viscosity of baker's yeast suspensions was employed to control the cell concentration of the mixing of baker's yeast and distilled water. The apparent viscosity of baker's yeast was found to be a function of cell concentration and independent of the flow rate through the rotational viscometer. The viscometer and mixing unit were found to have first order dynamics. The open loop dynamics of the control system were nonlinear but could be linearized for small perturbations. The control system was employed to successfully control the cell concentration but exhibited nonlinear behavior.

Notes: A two-stage aerobic continuous process is suggested for the conversion of poultry waste into a single-cell protein (SCP) product. The technical feasibility of the process is examined in this paper. Using bench-scale apparatus the approximate growth kinetics have been discovered. Possible modes of product recovery have been examined. The product consists primarily of a strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens which has a lysine-rich (∼9.3%) amino acid profile that could make this product an attractive feed ingredient for poultry diets.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of Steel Fiber Reinforced Aluminium under Torsional and Compressive LoadingA fiber-shaped composite material which, due to its fabrication process and internal structure may be called a double fiber composite, and whose strength behaviour is significantly influenced by boundary layers and porosity has been tested by means of two test methods: 1The possibility is demonstrated to determine by a non-destructive elastic torsional test the useful cross section for the utilization of the material, taking the quality-reducing factors into consideration.2Pressure tests have shown good agreement with Timoshenko and Gere's wave theory extended in this particular case. .
