    Description / Table of Contents: Die Darstellung einer weiteren Reihe Poly(β-chlorthioäther) aus der Reaktion von 4,4′-Methylendisulfenylchlorid (2) mit Diolefinen wird beschrieben. Poly(sulfon)e wurden durch kontrollierte Oxidation der Poly(β-chlorthioäther) aus 2 und aus 4,4′-Biphenyldisulfenylchlorid (1), Poly(disulfid)e durch die Reaktion von 1 oder 2 mit Dithiolen oder metallischem Lithium dargestellt. Sämtliche Polymere wurden durch ihre IR-, NMR-Spektren bzw. Elementaranalysen und durch Molekulargewichtsbestimmungen charakterisiert.
    Notes: The preparation of a further series of poly(β-chlorothioether)s, from reaction of 4,4′-methylenedisulphenyl chloride (2) with diolefins, is described. Poly(sulphone)s were prepared by controlled oxidation of the poly(β-chlorothioether)s from 2 and from 4,4′-biphenyldisulphenyl chloride (1). Poly(disulphide)s were prepared by reaction of 1 or 2 with dithiols or lithium metal. All the above polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, elemental analysis, and rel. mol. mass determinations.

    Notes: cis-1,4-Polybutadiene (PBD) was reacted with a number of sulfenyl derivatives to produce adducts of varying degrees of saturation. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the modified polymer increases with extent of reaction with p-toluenesulfenyl chloride (1c) and 2-nitrobenzenesulfenyl benzoate (2a). DSC traces indicate a “blocky” structure in adducts of 1c but not of 2a. The tensile strengths at break of the adducts of 1c show a progressive increase with increasing degree of saturation.

    Notes: The 50 per cent adduct of benzenesulfenyl chloride (1b) to cis-1,4-polybutadiene shows a two-phase morphology as has been observed in the corresponding adduct of p-toluenesulfenyl chloride (1a). These adducts appear to contain blocky structures which may form if the sulfur atom on a reacted monomeric unit can activate the olefinic bond of an adjacent, unreacted monomeric unit. Kinetic and model compound studies on the additions of 1a and 1b to polybutadiene support this explanation. The activating mechanism does not operate during addition of 2-nitrobenzenesulfenyl chloride (1c) and 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfenyl chloride (1d), which, therefore, yield adducts with a single-phase morphology.

    Notes: Summary Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was introduced directly into the cerebral cortex of adult rats, which were allowed to survive for 60 min before perfusion fixation. After the tissue had been incubated to demonstrate HRP at the LM and EM levels, blocks of cortical tissue were taken at varying distances from the injection site. These eight blocks of tissue constituted a time sequence for HRP diffusion. Qualitative examination of the presynaptic terminals showed that the most commonly encountered profiles are the plain synaptic vesicles, many of which accumulate tracer. In some terminals labelled vesicles are “lined-up” in tubular fashion. Other profiles commonly labelled are coated vesicles, tubular and vacuolar cisternae, and plain and coated pinocytotic vesicles. Quantitative analyses based on the number of terminals containing labelled profiles demonstrate an early rise in the rate of labelling of both plain synaptic vesicles and coated vesicles, after which synaptic vesicle labelling rises slowly towards a plateau. By contrast, there is a late parallel increase in the rate of labelling of coated vesicles and cisternae. A more detailed analysis, based on the actual numbers of labelled and total profiles within each presynaptic terminal, highlight early and late periods of rapid labelling for plain synaptic vesicles, coated vesicles and cisternae. A further aspect of HRP incorporation studied, concerns its uptake into four delineated regions of the presynaptic terminal. Our data indicate that membrane uptake into the presynaptic terminal is accomplished mainly via coated vesicles, although plain synaptic vesicles may also be involved. Coated vesicles, in turn, appear to give rise directly to plain synaptic vesicles, with some coalescing to produce vacuolar cisternae. The latter are involved in a two-way interchange of membrane with tubular cisternae, plain synaptic vesicles and coated vesicles. An additional source of plain synaptic vesicles are the tubular cisternae. Exocytosis of plain synaptic vesicles constitutes the mechanism by which transmitter is released from the presynaptic terminal.

    Notes: The extent of bone remodelling under metal fixation plates attached to bone by (i) normal screw fixation and (ii) bone ingrowth into a porous metallic surface underlayer sintered to the metal plate was investigated. Extensive bone remodelling was observed under the integrally bonded porous surface layered plate. This remodelling could be attributed to the more extensive stress transfer from bone to metal plate because of the good bone-to-implant bonding. The importance of stress shielding with high stiffness implants is demonstrated.

    Notes: A tougher, more fatigue-resistant bone cement consisting of short, highmodulus carbon fibers dispersed randomly in normal poly(methyl methacrylate) bone cement has been developed. Fatigue and impact tests are reported that demonstrate the superior fracture resistance and prolonged load-carrying ability of this system.The use of this carbon fiber-reinforced bone cement in the treatment of a pathological fracture of the femur associated with neoplastic disease of the bone is reported. The tougher cement has provided long-term stability of the fracture.

    Notes: An evaluation of a porous biodegradable ceramic, tricalcium phosphate, has been carried out. When implanted in cancellous bone, it is rapidly infiltrated with bone and slowly resorbed. When held rigidly against raw, bleeding, cortical bone, again rapid bone ingrowth occurs.The material does not give rise to any untoward tissue reaction, nor does it cause any systemic reaction. It can therefore be concluded that the material is safe for use in clinical practice, and can be used in specific instances either to replace or to supplement bone grafting.
