    Notes: The influence of combined forced and free convection on the performance of a reverse osmosis system in a horizontal circular pipe is examined. The free convective motion, which is superimposed upon the main axial flow, is caused by buoyancy forces arising from the buildup of a dense solute boundary layer near the membrane surface. The three-dimensional convective diffusion problem is solved by dividing it into a perturbation part accounting for the buoyancy effects present for Ra ≠ 0 and a nonperturbation part for the intrinsic convective flow pattern present even when Ra = 0.An approximate solution to the nonperturbation equations is obtained from the literature, and the perturbation equations are solved using a stream function-vorticity scheme valid for high Schmidt numbers. The effects of rejection parameter, Rayleigh number, and pressure parameter on the Sherwood number and concentration polarization are studied. Correlations are developed for the asymptotic Sherwood number and the effective axial length at which free convection becomes significant. The numerical results are in reasonable agreement with limiting analytical solutions and with the experimental asymptotic Sherwood numbers measured by Derzansky and Gill (1974) and Hsieh et al. (1976).

    Notes: The operation of two arrangements of multistage adsorption beds, parallel and series, was analyzed, and the optimal design problem of minimizing the capital and operating costs of the multistage adsorption bed systems was formulated. Solution of the optimization problem was obtained by using the Fibonacci search scheme. For the purpose of the study, data on the adsorption of liquid on activated carbon were taken from the literature for both single solute and multisolute adsorption systems and was used to derive the expressions for adsorption rate and the equilibrium relationship. Details of the performance of the optimally designed multistage adsorption bed systems are presented in terms of the physical and design parameters.

    Notes: The influence of combined forced and free convection on the surface reaction of a laminarly flowing species in a rectangular channel is studied. The free convective motion, which is superimposed upon the main axial flow, arises from a transverse density gradient produced by the release of a reaction product, or heat, at the channel wall. A numerical stream function-vorticity method is employed to solve the three-dimensional conservation equations in the case of large Schmidt number. Effects of aspect ratio, diffusivity ratio, surface reaction rate, and Rayleigh number upon the overall reactant conversion rate and local Sherwood number are examined. Reasonable agreement is obtained with experimental data for a hydrochloric acid-calcium carbonate surface reaction.

    Notes: A theoretical study was carried out for the analysis of the high pressure polyethylene tubular reactor with axial mixing (TRAM). In the study, the Contraction Mapping Theorem in the square-integrable function space L2[0, 1] was first used to derive a uniqueness criterion for the existence of the steady state solution of the polyethylene TRAM. Then, an algorithm was derived which enabled us to compute the profiles of reactor temperature and concentration. Details of reactor performance were investigated in terms of the reactor operating and design variables: heat transfer coefficient, feed temperature and concentration, axial mixing, the length of reactor, and the distribution of preheating and cooling zones of the reactor. Also investigated in this study was the product quality in terms of the number-average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution as affected by change in reactor operating conditions and by the chain transfer reactions.

    Notes: PVC has been dehydrochlorinated with alcoholic alkali in soution at 7°C for different lengths of time. At early stages of dehydrochlorination the dominant reaction is intramolecular removal of HCl and this gives rise to two intense Raman bands at ∼ 1126 (ν1) and ∼ 1518 cm-1 (ν2) and following UV irradiation, to a quadruplet ESR spectrum. Increasing polyene sequence length and intermolecular removal of HCl at later stages of reaction alters the quadruplet signal to a singlet, shifts ν1 and ν2 to lower frequencies and increases the molecular weight. The presence of polyene units stiffens the chain and increases the elastic modulus. The Tg is, however, lowered slightly due to the removal of bulky chlorine atoms which relieves steric hindrance and dipole interaction between neighboring chains. The β-transition is also rendered less distinct.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to gain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of gas bubbles during the structural foam injection molding operation. For the study, a rectangular mold cavity with glass windows on both sides was constructed, which permitted us to record on a movie film the dynamic behavior of gas bubbles in the mold cavity as a molten polymer containing inert gas was injected into it. The mold was designed so that either isothermal or nonisothermal injection molding could be carried out. Materials used were polystyrene, high-density polyethylene, and polycarbonate. As chemical blowing agents, sodium bicarbonate (which generates carbon dioxide), a proprietary hydrazide and 5-phenyl tetrazole, both generating nitrogen, were used. Injection pressure, injection melt temperature, and mold temperature were varied to investigate the kinetics of bubble growth (and collapse) during the foam injection molding operation. It was found that the processing variables (e.g., the mold temperature, the injection pressure, the concentration of blowing agent) have a profound influence on the nucleation and growth rates of gas bubbles during mold filling. Some specific observations made from the present study are as follows: an increase in melt temperature, blowing agent concentration, and mold temperature brings about an increase in bubble growth but more non-uniform cell size and its distribution, whereas an increase in injection pressure (and hence injection speed) brings about a decrease in bubble growth but more uniform cell size and its distribution. Whereas almost all the theoretical studies published in the literature deal with the growth (or collapse) of a stationary single spherical gas bubble under isothermal conditions, in structural foam injection molding the shape of the bubble is not spherical because the fluid is in motion during mold filling. Moreover, a temperature gradient exists in the mold cavity and the cooling subsequent to mold filling influences bubble growth significantly. It is suggested that theoretical study be carried out on bubble growth in an imposed shear field under nonisothermal conditions.

    Notes: A study of the effect of a series of fire retardants and antimony oxide upon the dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of polypropylene suggests three categories. (1) “Inert Fillers” - These raise the elastis modulus and the heat distortion temperature of polypropylene without shifting its glass transition temperature. The melting point of polypropylene is only depressed by 1-3°C, the heat of fusion and the percentage of crystallinity of polypropylene in these composites is ∼10 percent lower at additive concentrations of ∼30 percent. Very poor interaction exists between the additive and the thermo-plastic which apparently exist in two separate phases. (2) “Chain Stiffener” - These raise the elastic modulus (∼25 percent) and the glass transition (∼11°C) for polypropylene; the melting point of polypropylene in the composite is lowered by ∼6°C indicative of good interaction between the additive and polypropylene. (3) “Plasticizer” - These lower the room temperature elastic modulus (∼20 percent) and the glass transition temperature (∼11°C) of polypropylene; the melting point of polypropylene in the composite is depressed by ∼10°C indicating good interaction. The efficacy of the “plasticizer” and “chain stiffener” are attributed partially to melting of polypropylene at the processing temperature.
