Notes: Metastable ions have been investigated for n-butane d7 molecular ions using a tandem mass spectrometer which samples unimolecular decay processes occuring during the time interval of c.2 μs to 4 ms after ion formation. Some 37% of ions formed by 70 eV electron impact decay on this time scale. The competing unimolecular processes observed, in order of relative importance, are methance, methyl radical and hydrogen atom elimination. The slow metastables sample the threshold energy regime of unimolecular reactions responsible for forming the ordinary mass spectrum of butance and very large isotope effect are noted for the deuterated molecule.

Notes: The reactions of [CH3]+ and [CD3]+ with a number of C1 to C5 alcohols were studied at approximately thermal energies (0.1 eV) using a tandem Dempster ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. Branching ratios obtained under single collision conditions are reported for [CH3]+ and [CD3]+ with methanol, perdeutero methanol, ethanol, allyl alcohol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, perdeutero-2-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, t-butanol, cyclopentanol and 1-pentanol. The results are examined in terms of the mechanism of reactions and indicate that upon progression to larger alcohols, the formation of a long-lived adduct becomes less important in determining the reaction products.

Notes: A tandem Dempster-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer was used to examine metastable transitions in benzene, toluene, anisole and anisole 1,3,5-d3. The tandem-ion cyclotron resonance technique examines all unimolecular reactions of the injected, mass-selected ion, which occur between the injection time of several microseconds and the ion cyclotron resonance reaction section residence time of several milliseconds. The long sampling interval results in different relative intensities and considerably larger isotope effects than have been observed in previous studies.
