Notes: Finite element buckling analyses of plates are performed by means of quardrilateral elements having 12 degrees-of-freedom. It is found that if the plate is capable of appreciable transverse shear deformation, initial-stress stiffness matrices that represent the lateral dispalcement by cubic polynomials do not yield convergence to correct results. An initial-stress stiffness that works satisfactorily for both homogeneous and sandwich plates is formulated. A Fortran listing of the associated subroutine is provided.

Notes: Four new ways to relieve the excessive bending stiffness of linear elements are described, and incorporated into plane elements. All satisfy the ‘patch test’. The new elements are compared with existing elements in test problems. Application to three-dimensional problems is proposed.

Notes: We consider finite elements that have internal degrees-of-freedom. These d.o.f. are condensed before elements are assembled into the structure, and must be recovered later for use in element stress computation. References 1 and 2 describe two different ways to do the calculations. This paper compares the computational costs of the two methods. Test runs were made to assess costs. Relative costs depend on several factors. The factors are discussed, and suggestions are made as to the better method in various circumstances.

Notes: A method is proposed for making overly stiff elements more flexible. The central idea is quite simple and is illustrated by application to a sample element, whose behaviour is greatly improved. The effort needed to soften an element is very small if its stiffness matrix is naturally produced with reference to generalized co-ordinates before a final transformation to nodal displacement degrees-of-freedom.

Notes: We introduce a finite element model for stress analysis of threaded connections. Instead of modelling individual threads, the thread zone is replaced by a layer of elements with orthotropic properties. The principal directions of orthotropy depend upon the thread geometry and upon the direction of load, which is not necessarily known a priori. Both conventional and tapered threads are considered. The latter problem is nonlinear, as the number of threads in contact is a function of the load. Numerical results for conventional and tapered threads agree well with theoretical and exeprimental results in the literature.

Notes: A finite element may satisfy all convergence requirements and work well except for being too stiff or too flexible when the mesh is coarse. Here we discuss a technique for softening or stiffening such elements, provided that they have internal degrees-of-freedom. The technique is applied to a previously derived plate element, and the element is found to be much improved.

Notes: We present a new three-dimensional finite element, with the customary three displacement d.o.f. at each corner but no internal d.o.f. It passes the patch test and, for rectangular elemtents, exactly models pure bending. In numerical tests, the new element is found to be both accurate and efficient. It has the added advantage that its bending and twisting stiffnesses can be individually adjusted.

Notes: Summary The spatial and temporal relationships between cytoplasmic filaments and the morphogenesis of the intestinal brush border were examined by transmission electron microscopy of normally developing tissue and of tissue exposed to a variety of experimental conditions in organ culture. Distinct stages in the development of the brush border were identified: (1) Irregular projections of the apical plasma membrane that contain a network of microfilaments are converted to uniform projections filled with a core bundle of straight microfilaments (7–11d of incubation). (2) Rootlets form by an elongation or aggregation of filaments (11–15d). (3) The terminal web forms first as a network of short filaments just below the apical plasma membrane, then secondarily stratifies into two layers (19d of incubation to 3d posthatching). (4) Core filaments elongate as microvilli achieve their maturity (21d of incubation to 5d posthatching). Microvillus formation was not perturbed by culturing 9d tissue in high concentrations of Ca++ or Mg++, either with or without the ionophore, A23187. Rootlet formation was stimulated by high Mg++, with or without A23187, and, for reasons unknown, by ethanol. Terminal web formation was not stimulated by Mg++ or Ca++, but the integrity of the terminal web was lost when 21d embryonic tissue was cultured with EGTA or cytochalasin B. After stratification, the terminal web could not be disrupted by EGTA, but instead was aggregated to the center of the apical end of the cell.
