Description: Cultured skin fibroblasts from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are more resistant to dexamethasone toxicity than are normal cells. We now report that, when fibroblasts cultured from obligate CF heterozygotes are exposed to dexamethasone, they have an intermediate survival compared to normal and homozygous CF cells. When dexamethasone survival was tested on cells from four patients undergoing amniocentesis, cells from a woman at risk of producing a child with CF showed significant dexamethasone resistance, similar to that of fibroblasts derived from lnown CF homozygotes; the other amniotic cell specimens showed dexamethasone sensitivity similar to that of normal skin fibroblasts. These data suggest that the dexamethasone resistance previously observed in skin fibroblasts may also be useful in the prenatal diagnosis of CF.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Breslow, J L -- Epstein, J -- Fontaine, J H -- Forbes, G B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jul 14;201(4351):180-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/663650" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The SBH experiment on ISEE-C will provide maps of the large scale structure of the interplanetary magnetic field from ten solar radii altitude to the earth orbit, in and out of the ecliptic. The SBH instrument will track type III solar radio bursts at 24 frequencies in the range 30 kHz-2 MHz thus providing the positions of 24 points along the line of force which guides the electrons producing the radio radiation. The antennas are two dipoles: one (90 m long) in the spin plane, the other (15 m long) along the spin axis. The receiver was designed for high sensitivity (0.3 microV in 3 kHz BW), high intermodulation rejection (80 dB/1 microV input for order 2 products), large dynamic range (70 dB), high selectivity (-30-dB response 6.5 kHz away from the center frequency of 10.7 MHz for the 3 kHz BW channels), and high reliability (expected orbital life: 3 years).

Description: The manufacture and properties of a grating intended for extrasolar X-ray studies are described. The manufacturing process uses a split laser beam exposing an interference pattern on the photoresist-coated glass plated with a nickel parting layer. The grating, supporting structure, and mounting frame are electrodeposited on the nickel parting layer, and the final product is lifted from the glass substrate by selective etching of the nickel. A model was derived which relates the number of counts received in a given order m as a function of photon wavenumber. A 4-deg beam line was used to measure the efficiencies of gold transmission gratings for diffraction of X-rays in the range of 45 to 275 eV. The experimental results are in good agreement with model calculations.

Notes: It is made clear that two different statements in the literature concerning energy derivatives are completely compatible by deriving them as two different interpretations of the same equation. Some other aspects of these results are also discussed.

Notes: An upper bound for E0, which has been derived from the conjugate eigenvalue problem by Hall, is discussed. It is emphasized that the bound is only guaranteed when V is negative-definite. An alternative bound is presented which is free from this restriction, and the underlying iterative procedure is given. Hall's result is generalized to admit internuclear distances, and the theory is illustrated by a one-dimensional system with delta-function potentials. Some disadvantages of the approach are mentioned.

Notes: Some of Moccia's formulas (Int. J. Quant. Chem. 8, 293 (1974)) for corrections to “not completely optimized variational parameters” are compared with those resulting from a perturbation theory analysis. It is not possible to choose the zero-order Hamiltonian (at least not in any simple way) so as to get exact agreement, but one choice does come close.

Notes: We consider the problem of determining variational, external-field-dependent corrections to nonoptimal zero-field nonlinear parameters. Both a direct analytic perturbation analysis and finite perturbation methods are described in a general way and in detail for the SCF approximation. The abstract theory is illustrated by reference to the results of several explicit calculations. Also, the sensitivity of the results to the choice of zero-field values is discussed.
