Notes: Chloroquine Enantiomers by Chromatographic Resolution and SynthesisThe chromatographic resolution of the antimalarial drug chloroquine (1) on an optically active polyamide is described. The results reveal that the optical purity of chloroquine formerly resolved with d-bromocamphorsulfonic acid was 12% only. A facile synthesis of the enantiomers via the optically active diamine 4 is given.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress-Rupture Testing under Superimposed Steam Corrosion.Extent and Morphology of Stress-Assisted Surface and Bulk Oxidation of Incoloy Alloy 800 Thin Wall Tubing.Continuing long-time stress-rupture testing under biaxial stresses and superimposed steam corrosion of Incoloy Alloy 800 thin wall tubing, the extent and morphology of stress-assisted additional surface and bulk oxidation was evaluated by quantitative metallography. This paper describes the stress-assisted additional corrosion as function of tangential stress or corresponding rupture-life, creep strain, and creep rate. The results are presented and explained on the basis of surface and bulk penetrating oxide morphology.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into the effects of alternating current on magnesium anodesLaboratory tests were made to study the effects of alternating current on magnesium anodes. The electrolytes used were 20% soil solution (resistivity 34 Ωm), 0.72% sodium sulphate solution (resistivity 1 Ωm) and desalinated water (4.000 Ωm).The tests showed that it is not the a. c. voltage but the a. c. density which is the reason for a positive potential shift in magnesium anode systems. The critical density is 20 A/m2. Polarity reversal in the magnesium/iron galvanic cell occurs at an a. c. density of 60 A/m2 depending on the electrolyte; at this density, the anodic magnesium becomes cathodic. Magnesium anode mass loss tests carried out to study the effect of alternating current on magnesium anodes showed that the anode mass loss amounts to approx. 20 grammes/day/m2 at a current density of 20 A/m2; mass loss increases as a linear function of a. c. density. As far as pipeline applications are concerned, it is important to note that anode mass loss is particularly high in low resistivity soils in areas where high a. c. voltages are induced into the pipeline system.

Notes: The Nature of the Transition Metal to Carbon σ-bond. II. Mass Spectrometric Investigations of Mono-organyl-Transition Metall Complexes of Phthalocyanine and SalenIn the mass spectra of monomethyl and monophenyl complexes of Fe(III) and Co(III) phthalocyanines (RMPc) there are observed peaks at higher mass numbers than that of the molecular ion which are described to products containing more than one organyl group. It is concluded from the mass spectra and the ionization efficiency curves of the ions R2MPc+, RMPc+ and MPc+ that, due to the high temperature in the inlet system of the mass spectrometer, in the solid state a loss of the organyl residue R and an attack of the radicals at the phthalocyanine ring takes place. The mass spectra of methyl- and phenyl-cobalt(III)-salen do not contain any peaks at higher mass numbers than the molecular ion. The problems of mass spectrometric determination of the strength of the transition metal to carbon σ-bond are discussed.

Notes: Synthesis of Substance P and of Acylated Partial SequencesSubstance P undecapeptide has been synthesized by the stepwise procedure and via condensation of the fragments 1-4 and 5-11. Formation of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid- and S-tert. butyl peptides was observed. Gln(Mbh)-containing sequences have been synthesized but were not useful for fragment condensation due to there low solubility. Additionally, some derivatives have been prepared by acylation of the C-terminal pentapeptide. Reaction with trifluoracetic acid anhydride resulted in the formation of substituted 5-amino-oxazole derivatives as detected by mass spectrometric investigation.

Notes: The influence of the 9,10-double bond in the ergoline skeleton on the fragmentation behaviour of lysergic acid and 9,10-dihydrolysergic acid is discussed. The main fragmentation pathways were determined using high resolution mass spectrometry and metastable ion studies. The 70 eV electron impact spectra are compared with the 12 eV electron impact spectra and the negative ion mass spectra (2-4 eV).

Description / Table of Contents: Automatic Acquisition of Ionization Efficiency Curves to the Determination of Ionization and Appearance PotentialsIn order to determine ionization and appearance potentials of organic compounds, a scanner was developed, continuously controlling the energy of the bombarding electrons from 30 to 5 eV in about 30 seconds. The automatic acquisition, accumulation and output of ionization efficiency curves with the described system scanner-mass spectrometer-computer requires only one-tenth of the time needed for manual work, thus allowing examination of thermally less stable or extremely volatile compounds.

Notes: Halogenolipids. I. Mass Spectrometric Structure Investigation of the Isomeric Halogeno-propanediols Esterified with Fatty Acids (Deoxyhalogeno-glycerides)The mass spectrometric behaviour of the isomers of cytostatic effective halogeno-propanediols esterfied with fatty acids (deoxyhalogeno-monoglycerides and deoxyhalogeno-diglycerides) are investigated. The unambiguous structure of individual isomers is deduced from the characteristic fragmentation patterns of mass spectra. The synthesis of the mentioned compounds is described.
