Description / Table of Contents: Transition Metal Phosphido Complexes. II. Phosphido and Bistrimethylsilylphosphido Complexes of Nickelcp(PPh3)NiCl and LiP(SiMe3)2 react to give cp(PPh3)NiP(SiMe3)2 1, the first nickel complex containing a terminal phosphido group. 1 reacts with Ni(CO)4 in a complex reaction series with intermediates, in which the PPh3 ligand has been substituted by CO, yielding [cpNiP(SiMe3)2]2 2, the first Ni - P four membered ring compound, containing P-functional groups. Cleaving the Si—P bonds of 2 using methanol, a ring expansion reaction is observed, forming the six membered ring compound [cpNiPH2]3 8a. 8a also can be obtained directly by reaction of cp(PPh3)NiCl with Me3SiPH2. NMR, IR, and mass spectral data are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: The LiPH2 ·1 MonoglymeA convenient synthesis of the crystalline LiPH2 · 1 monoglyme is reported by metallating PH3 with n-butyllithium in monoglyme (86% yield relative to n-butyllithium). LiPH2 · 1 monoglyme is stable at room temperature and reasonably soluble in thf, mono-, di-, and triglyme. On pumping (oil pump) it decomposes to “Li2PH” liberating PH3 and monoglyme. “Li2PH” is insoluble in the above mentioned solvents.
