Description: The prediction of fluxes of energetic particles of solar or magnetospheric origin is addressed. Topics include the prediction of the properties of the particle populations generated by magnetospheric storms and substorms, and the prediction of long term variations in the populations of magnetospheric particles.

Description: The experimental results on the use of superconductive systems onboard of spacecraft are described. To ensure low temperatures in the cryostat under weightlessness, helium was used at a pressure above the critical pressure. In flight, the temperature was controlled at six points, while the pressure and intensity of the magnetic field were controlled in the solenoids. The methodical test proved it possible to mount special installations on satellites, with extensive magnetic fields based on superconductive alloys, and particularly, low weights and low power consumption magnetic analyzers.

Description: We have calculated the energy spectra of cosmic ray secondary antiprotons and positrons using the latest available data on inclusive reactions. Using the measured positron spectrum, we have found that the amount of matter traversed by the cosmic rays in the few GeV region to be 4.7 (+ or - 1.5) g/sq cm of interstellar hydrogen. The computed antiproton to proton ratio is about .0004 for energies 5-10 GeV. This is sufficient to make observations of antiprotons feasible from balloon flights. We have also pointed out the type of information that can be obtained if accurate information of the spectra of these two components becomes available.

Description: Preliminary results are reported for a search by HEAO 1 for gamma-ray lines from the Galactic Center in the energy range from 1.5 to 8 MeV. The hard X-ray/low-energy gamma-ray instrument aboard HEAO 1 is briefly described, and results are examined which indicate no obvious statistically significant spectral lines from the Galactic Center. It is concluded that the present observations fail to confirm the previously reported 4.4-MeV flux from the Galactic Center but that the existence of the reported 4.4-MeV feature cannot be strongly rejected on the basis of these results.

Description: A highly noise suppressed TF 34 engine was used to investigate the noise of several powered lift configurations involving upper surface blown (USB) flaps. The configuration variables were nozzle type (i.e. slot and circular with deflector), flap chord length, and flap angle. The results of velocity surveys at both the nozzle exit and the flap trailing edge are also presented and used for correlation of the noise data. Configurations using a long flap design were 4 db quieter than a short flap typical of current trends in USB flap design. The lower noise for the long flap is attributed primarily to the greater velocity decay of the jet at the flap trailing edge. The full-scale data revealed substantially more quadrupole noise in the region near the deflected jet than observed in previous sub-scale tests.

Notes: Polystyrenes, both linear and crosslinked with various crosslink densities, having modified end-group structures, were synthesized with the objective of studying chain-end mobility in the glassy state. One end of each polymer chain of these polystyrenes was modified with a fluorescent molecule. These polymers containing fluorescent probes in specific environments have been used in studies of segmental motion using fluorescence depolarization. The mobility has been studied below the glass-transition temperature as a function of temperature and crosslink density. The experimental data show that chain-end mobility is not of major importance in connection with the β-transition.

Notes: Partial molar excess free enthalpies (or excess chemical potentials) at infinite dilution were obtained over a large temperature range by gas chromatography. Data on n-alkenes in Apiezon M are interpreted by the Prigogine-Patterson theory; data on normal and branched alkanes in squalane and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are discussed in terms of the Prigogine-Patterson theory and the solution theory of Flory, Orwoll, and Vrij. For the alkane-PDMS systems heats of dilution and partial excess heat capacity data are given. The aim of this work is to get some insight in the applicability of these solution theories to mixtures of fluids, the properties of which may slightly violate the basic assumptions of these theories. It is shown that orientational order in and a large cross-sectional chain diameter of the polymer solvent do not affect their applicability to the partical molar excess free enthalpies of apolar mixtures, whereas large dissimilarities between the force fields around the segments of the mixture components and/or dissimilar chain flexibilities detract from the applicability of these theories (alkanes in PDMS).Special attention has been paid to the effects of dissimilar size and shape of the segments of the mixture compounds on the magnitude of the interchange interaction parameter. It is shown that the multiple-connected segment model after Lichtenthaler et al. does not warrant a reliable combinatorial contribution. Comparison of the interaction parameters obtained for n-alkanes in n-alkanes, Apiezon, squalane, and polyisobutylene and for branched alkanes in squalane reveals that the magnitude of this parameter is affected by small end-effects due to the relative weakness of methyl-methylene interactions.

Notes: Fourier transform infrared spectra have been obtained for polyethylene irradiated in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres. The spectra before and after irradiation have been compared by digital subtraction. The difference spectra are indicative of changes caused by irradiation. Crosslinking and chain scission reactions produce the observed changes.

Notes: Proton spin-lattice relaxation times T1 were measured for two samples of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), one with weight-average molecular weight Mw = 77,400 and the other with Mw = 609,000. Two T1 minima and a T1 discontinuity were observed for each compound. The high-temperature T1 minima were attributed to a stretching and flexing motion of the PDMS chain. Quantitative comparison of the relaxation data with a theoretical model developed for this motion allowed the activation energy, 2.3 kcal/mole, and the maximum angular displacement of the methyl group symmetry axis to be determined. The latter was found to be 31°, independent of sample molecular weight. The low-temperature minima were ascribed to methyl reorientation with an activation energy of 1.6 kcal/mole. The T1 discontinuities were attributed to melting and allowed the degree of crystallinity to be estimated.

Notes: Neutron transmission of polydimethylsiloxane has been measured as a function of neutron wavelength in the range 4-10 Å, at room temperature. Scattering cross sections per hydrogen atom have been obtained and the slope (12.2 ± 0.2) barns/Å has been derived. Comparison with calibration curves relating the slope to the barrier hindering internal rotation as well as comparison with calculated neutron cross sections using the Krieger-Nelkin formalism for different dynamical situations indicates practically free rotation of CH3 groups about their C3 symmetry axes.
