    Notes: The characterization of recently synthesized (Pro-Pro-Gly)n, n = 7, 8 is described, along with melting profile studies of its association equilibrium, and thermal quenching studies of the kinetics of its association reaction. The order of the kinetic reaction is about 3, implying that three peptide chains are involved in the activated state of the rate-limiting step. The reaction rate was found to exhibit a negative temperature coefficient. With the (Pro-Pro-Gly)7 peptide, the concentration dependence of the (Pro-Pro-Gly)n association equilibrium was observed for the first time.Detailed thermodynamic analysis for these n = 7, 8 data, together with literature data for n = 10, 15, 20 were carried out for both the simple “all-or-none” binding model and for a series of complex equilibrium models. For the latter, all of the (Pro-Pro-Gly)n data (in 10% acetic acid) are fit best with a maximally cooperative near-neighbor model with a standard enthalpy change ΔH = -650 cal/mole of residues, and a standard entropy change ΔS = -14.63 -10/n cal/deg-mole of residues, wherein the -10 eu represents an end-effect contribution to the binding free energy.With regard to optical rotatory properties and thermodynamic parameters, the data for the new n = 7, 8 peptides match rather well with the literature data for the n = 10, 15, and 20 peptides.The enthalpic stabilization per residue of the triple-helical form of (Pro-Pro-Gly)n was nearly an order of magnitude smaller than the enthalpic stabilization per additional proline obtained from direct calorimetric measurements on native collagens of different (and much lower) proline contents by Privalov and Tiktopulo. [Biopolymers (1970) 9, 127-139.] Possible explanations for this phenomenon are discussed.

    Notes: This note describes improvements to the Suhara-Fukuda method for generating a triangular finite element network. These are based on the use of a node generation procedure which distributes nodes is a regular pattern across the network area and is sufficiently flexible to permit any variation in element density. Because of the regular node distribution, poorly shaped elements will not arise and so the procedure for connecting the nodes to form elements can be simplified. Examples of networks generaed in this way are given.

    Notes: The paper presents a finite element method for minimum weight design of structures with lower-bound constraints on the natural frequencies, and upper and lower bounds on the design variables.The design algorithm is essentially an iterative solution of the Kuhn-Tucker optimatility criterion. The three most important features of the algorithm are: (i) a-small number of design iterations are needed to reach optimal or near-optimal design, (ii) structural elements with a wide variety of size-stiffness may be used. The only significant restriction is the exclusion of curved beam and shell elements, (iii) the algorithm will for multiple as well as single frequency constraints.The design procedure is illustrated with three simple problems.

    Notes: It is shown that a singularity occurs in isoparametric finite elements if the mid-side nodes are moved sufficiently from their normal position. By choosing the mid-side node positions on standard isoparametric elements so that the singularity occurs exactly at the corner of an element it is possible to obtain quite accurate solutions to the problem of determining the stress intensity at the tip of a crack. The solutions compare favourably with those obtained using some types of special crack tip elements, but are not as accurate as those given by a crack tip element based on the hybrid principle. However, the hybrid elements are more difficult to use.

    Notes: Measurements are presented on the influence of Schmidt number on the frequency of the mass transfer fluctuations at a solid boundary. The shape of the spectral function is similar at all Schmidt numbers. A relation between the mass transfer fluctuations and the fluctuating velocity field can be obtained only at high frequencies. A comparison of the scale and the frequency of the mass transfer fluctuations and the velocity fluctuations suggests that the rate of mass transfer is controlled by convective motions in the flow oriented eddies described by a number of previous investigators. However, the concentration fluctuations caused by these convective motions are greatly dampened close to the wall by molecular diffusion. Thus the mass transfer fluctuations reflect only the scale and not the frequency of the convective motions in the flow oriented eddies.

    Notes: The sorption and rate of permeation of scopolamine base in human skin have been measured as a function of drug concentration in aqueous solution contacting the stratum corneum surface of the skin. The sorption isotherm is nonlinear, and the apparent penetrant diffusivity computed from steady state permeation data is greater than that estimated from unsteady state (time lag) measurements.By assuming that sorption occurs by both ordinary dissolution and binding of penetrant to immobile sites in the membrane, the experimental sorption isotherm can be predicted, and the disparity between steady state and time lag diffusivities can be reconciled.

    Notes: New measurements are presented on the influence of Schmidt number on the rate of mass transfer between a turbulent fluid and a pipe wall. It is found that for large Schmidt numbers the fully developed mass transfer coefficient is related to the friction velocity and the Schmidt number by the equation The experiments are accurate enough to rule out the Sc-2/3 or the Sc-2/3 relations commonly used, deduced from plausible limiting expressions for the eddy diffusivity close to a wall. It is argued that these expressions arevalid only over a vanishingly small portion of the concentration field as Sc → ∞.

    Notes: The penetration of drugs and other micromolecules through intact human skin can be regarded as a process of dissolution and molecular diffusion through a composite, multilayer membrane, whose principal barrier to transport is localized within the stratum corneum. A mathematical model of the stratum corneum as a two-phase protein-lipid heterogeneous membrane (in which the lipid phase is continuous) correlates the permeability of the membrane to a specific penetrant with the water solubility of the penetrant and with its lipid-protein partition coefficient.Experimentally measured permeabilities of human skin to a variety of drugs have been found to conform to this model. The extraordinarily low permeability of skin to most micromolecules appears to arise from the very low diffusivity of such molecules in the intercellular lipid phase.
