Notes: The terminal amino group of amino acids and peptides is blocked as the N-succinyl derivative by reaction with succinic anhydride. The product is then converted to the N,O-permethyl derivative in order to increase its volatility for use in mass spectrometry. The permethylated N-succinyl derivative retains the advantages of the permethylated N-acetyl derivative in regard to ease of preparation on a small scale, volatility and the presence of characteristic fragmentation patterns in their mass spectra. However, peaks in the high mass region are more abundant due to loss of CH3O· from the N-succinyl carbomethoxyl group as well as from the C-terminal carbomethoxyl group. Ions characteristic of the sequence and of individual amino acids are observed, and molecular weight can be determined from the relatively abundant ion at [M — CH3O]+ and from the weak molecular ion.

Notes: Melt How data has been determined for a series of fractionated and whole low density polyethylenes which has been characterized in terms of their molecular weights and degree of long-chain branching, (LCB). The resulting data indicate that low LCB influences melt flow both through a reduction in molecular size and an increased level of intermolecular interaction. Die swell measurements on whole polymers indicate an increase in melt elasticity with increase in degree of LCB for samples of similar melt flow (MI). Comparison of GPC data with observed die swell characteristics indicates that die swell is a molecular size dependent property and independent of intermolecular entanglement effects, suggesting that the measurement of elastic properties of LDPE melts will provide a means of determining relative degrees of LCB for commercial resins.

Notes: A summary of the transitional behavior of blends containing poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVF2, and various oxygen-containing polymers is presented. These data are used to establish the presence of a single miscible amorphous phase. The depression of the PVF2 melting point in those blends judged to be miscible is analyzed using standard thermodynamic arguments to determine the heats of mixing between the amorphous diluents and the PVF2. These heats of mixing are exothermic indicating the presence of strong interactions between the binary pairs. A comparison between the observed interaction strengths and the dipole moments of the various diluents suggests that the exothermic heats of mixing are the result of strong dipole-dipole interactions. Nearly all the miscible blends with PVF2 show Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) behavior. The direct correlation between the temperature location of this phase instability and the observed interaction strength suggests that the instability is more the result of enthalpic considerations than entropic ones.

Notes: To further investigate the nature of the specific interaction leading to the miscibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVF2, with certain oxygen containing polymers, blends of PVF2 with poly(ε-caprolactone), PCL, with poly(vinyl methyl ether), PVME, and with poly(vinyl methyl ketone), PVMK, were prepared. PVMK/PVF2 blends were found to be miscible while blends of PVME/PVF2 and PCL/PVF2 were found not to be miscible. These results show that the specific interaction with PVF2 involves mainly the carbonyl group rather than the entire ester group. The relative effectiveness of having this group in the chain or pendant to it is not yet resolved.

Notes: Gas-liquid chromatography has been used to estimate thermodynamic parameters of a variety of aromatic and aliphatic solvents at infinite dilution in poly(ethyl methacrylate). Heats of solution, Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, and specific interaction parameters were calculated from specific retention volumes. Comparative interpretation of these thermodynamic quantities has led to the establishment of a solvent selectivity scale for poly(ethyl methacrylate). Limitations of the threedimensional solubility parameter theory on the systems tested here are demonstrated. A significantly improved concept is developed and tested.

Notes: We have determined the activity of benzene in poly(ethylene oxide) over concentration ranges from 0 to 20 wt-% from 70° to 150°C using gas-liquid chromatography. The results are well corelated by the corresponding-states theory of Prigogine and Flory. Comparison between our results and those obtained by other workers using a “static” method indicate good agreement, except at very low benzene concentrations.

Notes: The Hildebrand solubility parameter δ, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ, dilute-solution viscosities, apparent melting temperatures, and the equilibrium swelling of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) granules in plasticizer are compared as methods for assessing the degree of PVC-plasticizer interaction. Results from the empirical methods agree well with each other, but not with δ or χ. A quantitative activity parameter α, derived from χ, correlates well with all results other than δ values. A relative order of plasticizer solvent power has been established for nine plasticizers of widely differing structures and activities.
