Notes: Single esophageal and paired cheliceral, palpal, pedal (I-IV), and opisthosomal nerves enter the synganglion and form specific neuropilar ganglia. The ganglia are integrated by a complex series of commissures and connectives. Eighteen paraldehyde-fuchsin-positive neurosecretory regions, which vary greatly in size and amount of granular neurosecretory material, are each associated (one or more) with neuropilar ganglia. Presumably transport of neurosecretory materials to target tissues occurs through axonal pathways, perineurial-neural lamella associations, and the neurohemal retrocerebral organ complex.

Notes: Sperm induction pores, tubuli annulati, rami sacculi, sacculus foemineus, cornu sacculus and acantho-membranous hood in female Dermanyssus gallinae support the probability of coxal insemination as reported for some other mesostigmatid species.Development of the circular testis in males (from fusion of two anterolaterally projecting protonymphal testicular arms) and formation of haploid (n = 3) spermatids from haploid (n = 3) spermatogonial cells is entirely mitotic. Spermatogenesis begins within one hour after protonymphal feeding and continues through adult ecdysis in normally fed individuals. Nutritional deficit causes cessation of spermatogenic divisions in deutonymphs starved 23 days, but is rapidly rejuvenated upon feeding. No rejuvenation of division was observed in adult males given the opportunity to feed, thus adult males might not feed.

Notes: Alkali treatment of corn stover improves the avaliability of cellulose and hemicellulose for enzymatic attack. Treatments were carried out for 1 to 60 min at temperatures and NaOH concentrations ranging from 100 to 150°C and 0 to 2%, respectively. Solubilization of the stover and sugar production by enzymatic hydrolysis (Trichoderma viride cellulase) of the solid residue and the dissolved solids were used to measure the effect of caustic treatment. At 150°C and 2% NaOH concentration, 65% of the original stover was dissolved after 5 min and 52% saccharificatin (g sugar/g stover) of the residue and dissolved solids by enzymatic hydrolysis was achieved compared to 20% for untreated corn stover.

Notes: Techniques have been developed for the rapid separation (about 20 minutes) of the 39 compounds in crude petroleums, or petroleum distillates, which boil between 28 and 114°C. A 300 meter glass column (0.25 mm i.d.) which is etched, coated with a mixture of normal hexadecane and Kel-F10157 is utilized to perform this separation at room temperature. The separations obtained with this non-polar liquid mixture and the «inert» glass surface are much more rapid than those previously obtained with stainless steel capillary columns.

Description / Table of Contents: Anodic corrosion processes on steels in inert and oxidising atmospheresThe purpose of the investigation here described was to find out to what extent electrochemical techniques lend themselves to the examination of steel corrosion in the presence of molten sulphates and combustion gases. The measured equilibrium potentials of an inert metal electrode are intended to serve for the determination of the redox potential in the salt melt/combustion gases system. If no current is flowing, the stationary potential of a platinum electrode in a sulphate melt at 600° C can be expressed by the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm E} = 0.712 + 0.088\log {\rm PS0}_{\rm 2} \cdot {\rm P0}_{\rm 2} $$\end{document} where E signifies the potential related to the silver/silver sulphate electrode, and pSO2 pO2 the partial pressures (in atmospheres) of the two gases in an inert gas (nitrogen + carbon dioxide). The formula permits the conclusion that the electrode reaction can be expressed by the equilibrium condition .The anode currents set up if the potential of a mild steel or pure iron electrode is kept at the above-mentioned temperature viz. -0.3 V with N2 + CO2 + 5% O2, or + 0.4 V with N2 + CO2 + 0.2% SO2, show that under the test conditions, these metals would be greatly exposed to corrosion. Stainless steels become passive after a few hours although a residual corrosion current at + 0.4 V remains. These observations give rise to the expectation that electro-chemical examinations may well represent a useful means of examining corrosion phenomena caused by molten salts in the presence of combustion gases, so that they merit more detailed investigation.

Notes: Fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry of a synthetic renin substrate decapeptide (Pro-His-Pro-Phe-His-Leu-Val-Ile-His-D-Lys) indicated the presence of several of side-products, including a component 12 Da higher in mass. Low-energy collisionally activated decomposition analyses were performed using a hybrid tanden, instrument and demonstrated that the heavier side product had two components, in which the structural modification was either at the N- or the C-terminus. Additional analyses of the N-acetyl derivative indicated that for each component the strucutrual modification blcoked a site of N-acetylation. It is suggested that the formation of these side products is attributable to the generation of formaldehyde, during removal of the histidine protecting group (benzyloxymethyl), which reacts with the N-terminus of the peptide to give an imidazolidinone structure or with the D-lysine ε-amine group to yield an imine. While the precise genesis of the side-products remains speculative, it is clear that the combined strategy of derivatization and tandem mass spectrometry has allowed structural conclusions concerning individual components of an isobaric mixture.

Notes: The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi were studied using light and electron microscopy. Mandibles, hypopharynx and labium are highly sclerotized and are modified for obtaining blood meals. All structures were larger in C. brakeleyi than in C. wirthi except mandibular and hypopharyngeal teeth; these were smaller and more numerous in C. brakeleyi. The labium of both species terminates in peg-like structures which are similar to those reported from several genera of mosquitoes. Sensillae on the second segment of the maxillary palps appear to be identical to those described in both biting and nonbiting male and female blackflies.

Notes: Polymeric materials which show sensitivity to certain classes of organic vapors and give minimal responses from interferents are being sought for use as coatings on piezoelectric mass detection devices. The present work illustrates some simple methods for the determination of fundamental properties such as polymer-solvent interaction parameters and diffusion constants, and relates these to the sensitivity and response time of the sensor. Polymers with a controlled variation in crosslink density were exposed to a variety of common solvents and vapors covering a range of solubility parameters. Seven non-crosslinked amorphous polymeric materials were also assessed for their suitability as selective coatings for the detection of a range of chemical warfare vapors. Gross differences in the response characteristics of coated crystals immersed in liquids can be predicted, and an approximate guide to the relative rates of solvent penetration can also be obtained. More accurate predictions are hampered by the lack of knowledge of the specific interactions which occur within polymer-solvent pairs. Crosslinking the polymer film to enable operation in strongly solvating liquids has the effect of reducing the extent of swelling to a larger degree than expected on the basis of existing theories. The operation of coated crystals in the gas phase at very high vapor concentrations leads to a dual site adsorption process which can be described by the BET equation. At much lower vapor concentrations Henry's law appears to determine the response, and a simple solution model developed from partition theory for stationary phases in gas-liquid chromatography can be used to interpret the sensitivity of three non-crosslinked amorphous polymeric films to DMMP, GA, GB, and GD. While adequately describing the responses of the organophosphorus esters, the model is not as satisfactory in predicting the interactions with HD. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
