Notes: Abstract Lethal and sublethal responses to the herbicides 2,4-D, DEF®, propanil, and trifluralin of various life history stages of the Dungeness crab,Cancer magister, were examined to estimate maximum acceptable toxicant concentrations (MATC) of each compound for this species. Zoeae were found, in long term tests, to be the most sensitive stage. Based on the experiments with this stage, MATCs were concluded to be 〉0.95, 〈6.9μg for DEF, ≥26, 〈220μg/L for trifluralin, ≥80, 〈 1,700μg/L for propanil, and 〈 1,000μg/L for the free acid form of 2,4-D.

Notes: Abstract In Phanerochaete chrysosporium fruit body formations is subject to strong catabolite repression by glucose in the presence of physiological levels of nitrogen. Walseth cellulose was found to be the best source of carbon for the induction of fruit body and consequent basidiospore synthesis. Ejected basidiospores collected from cultures grown under these conditions for two weeks are contaminated with neither conidia nor mycelial fragments and are therefore suitable for genetic analysis of recombination. Under conditions of nitrogen limitation, the glucose catabolite repression of fruit body synthesis was relieved. Exogenous adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate but not other related nucleotides, also relieved glucose catabolite repression of fruit body formation.

Notes: Abstract A soluble enzyme fraction from Phanerochaete chrysosporium catalyzed the oxidative decarboxylation of vanillic acid to methoxy-p-hydroquinone. The enzyme, partially purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, required NADPH and molecular oxygen for activity. NADH was not effective. Optimal activity was displayed between pH 7.5–8.5. Neither EDTA, KCN, NaN3, nor o-phenanthroline (5 mM) were inhibitory. The enzyme was inducible with maximal activity displayed after incubation of previously grown cells with 0.1% vanillate for 30h.

Notes: Abstract Heats of solution of 13 1∶1 electrolytes in 1-propanol have been determined calorimetrically at various electrolyte concentrations, and extrapolated to zero concentration to give ΔH s o values for these electrolytes. Together with literature data on three additional 1∶1 electrolytes, these measurements yield a self-consistent set of single-ion enthalpies of transfer from water to 1-propanol. Values are tabulated for 10 univalent cations and five univalent anions. It is shown that the ΔH t o (Ph 4 As+)=ΔH t o (Ph 4 B−) assumption yields chemically reasonable single-ion values. Using this assumption, it may be deduced that all the univalent ions studied have about the same enthalpy in 1-propanol as in methanol.

Notes: Abstract The failure of experiments with both neighborhood government and regional government has led to attempts to weld these two administrative formats. The result is the federated local authority. The urban planning function in London, England, is utilized as an example to show the failure of the federated authority concept due to its dependence on a metropolitan spirit among its citizens and on a strict division in decision-making between area and local concerns. Neither is attainable so the experiment fails at least in regard to citizen expectations concerning involvement. The proposed solution involves a weaker role for the borough or neighborhood units in the federation and an effort to support and encourage citizen involvement in decision-making via the political process. Disparities in political resources are rectified by recourse to “watchdog” groups to balance the growing power of technocratic planners.

Notes: Abstract There are large discrepancies between various recorded values for the free energy of transfer of the alkali metal cations from water to propylene carbonate. Using the known enthalpies of transfer given byKrishnan andfriedman, and the entropy correlation introduced byAbraham, these discrepancies are resolved in favour of the values obtained byCourtot-Coupez et al. and those due (indirectly) toGritzner. This enables, for the first time, a reasonably reliable set of free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of transfer to be constructed.

Notes: Abstract A new membrane oxygenator capable of effective and efficient arterialization of venous blood flowing through etched microchannels has been developed. The design flow capacity can be regulated up to 1.4 liters per minute with a priming volume of 80 cm3. The characteristics of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange are correlated to the effective channel depth and compared with theoretical predictions. An analysis of the resistance coefficient of blood flowing through the etched microchannels shows a significant reduction (50–65%) of the apparent viscosity of blood, indicating the peripheral plasma layer effect on the microflow processes. The particulate flow results in an anomalous oxygen and carbon dioxide, exchange above theoretical predictions for homogeneous fluids.

Notes: Abstract We grouped 14 stump-tail macques, five males and nine females, and observed social behavior before subjecting four of them to resection of orbitofrontal cortex. Four monkeys also received control lesions of superior temporal cortex and the remaining animals served as unoperated controls. Observations of social behavior continued after surgery on the following behavior: Joining, grooming, self-grooming, threat, aggression, and presenting (total hours of observation equaled 154). Monkeys with orbitofrontal lesions showed decreases in threat and aggression but only one such monkey fell in dominance. Control (operated and unoperated) monkeys displayed little change in these behaviors. Monkeys with orbitofrontal lesions also increased joining and self-grooming but showed a decrease in grooming of others. Presenting did not change. The role of orbitofrontal cortex in modulating different aspects of social interaction is emphasized by these results. However, in primates this area of the frontal lobes appears to have its major influence in the emotional loading of such complex behaviors.
