Notes: Abstract The specific growth rate (μ) of a respiration-deficient mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae growing under defined experimental conditions in batch culture (mineral medium plus glucose and vitamins at 25°C) varied from experiment to experiment over a wide range (0.10–0.24 h-1) and showed a normal distribution. Neither the age of the culture, the history of the inoculum, nor experimental error accounted wholy for the variability of μ. The variation was positively correlated with the specific rate of glucose transfer and negatively with the specific rate of production of non-fermentative CO2. The yield decreased with μ implying higher maintenance requirements in batch culture (4.7 mmoles g-1 h-1) than in continuous culture (0.8 mmoles g-1 h-1). It was concluded that the strain is capable of establishing any one of several steady states of growth under the same experimental conditions, each steady state displaying some buildin inertia with respect to change. The variations of the specific rates of glucose transfer and non-fermentative CO2 production, and of the yield appeared to be consequences rather than causes of the variation of μ. The ultimate causes of the variation of μ remained unidentified.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic after-effect of hydrogen-charged iron was investigated in the temperature range between 77 and 200 K. The hydrogen cold-work peak, known so far only from internal friction measurements, has been observed at about 130 K together with a less pronounced relaxation peak at 80 K. The activation energy of ∼0.29 eV, determined for the cold-work peak, is explained by a thermally activated motion of dislocations, the cores of which are closely decorated by a condensed atmosphere of hydrogen atoms.

Notes: Summary The decrease of the norepinephrine levels in hypothalamus and heart caused by stress is prevented by pargyline and imipramine. Such a decrease in spleen and adrenals is not affected. Chlorpromazine and lithium only prevent the norepinephrine decrease in the spleen. The uptake of H3norepinephrine by isolated atria of guinea-pig increases during anoxia; the change to a normal oxygen situation decreases these norepinephrine levels by more than 50%.

Notes: Summary Three different diallel crosses were studied in Cicer arietinum; two of size 6×6, one within each of the two botanical groups ‘macrosperma’ and ‘microsperma’ of the cultivated subspecies, and one of 9×9 involving lines covering most of the morphological variation of chickpea. Barriers to crossability present neither a botanical nor a geographical pattern, being probably a direct consequence of interactions between genotypes. The genetic systems of twelve quantitative characters were analysed. Full dominance in a negative sense (small values dominant) is shown by leaflet length, width and shape index, rachis length, leaflet density on the rachis and pod length. Full dominance in a positive sense is shown by seeds per pod. Overdominance (in a positive sense) is evident for pods, seeds and yield per plant. Weak reciprocal differences were manifested by pod length, and pods, seeds and yield per plant. The system controlling number of leaflets per leaf is not clear. Dominance of ‘primitive’ over ‘selected’ characters seems to be the rule. As far as the environmental effects have permitted the analysis, no differences in genetic systems were observed between botanical groups.

Notes: Abstract Inhibitors from (Pinus pinea L.) seed coats were separated using paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, and a Sephadex G-10 column. The inhibitory activity was resolved into several fractions. One of these behaved similarly to abscisic acid. It has exhibed the same properties as ABA in thin-layer chromatography, paper chromatography, and Sephadex G-10 chromatography and in UV absorption and fluorescence spectra. These germination inhibitors, present in the seed coats, are involved in the regulation of P. pinea seed germination.

Notes: Abstract In the technique for measuring pulse width by two-photon absorption fluorescence, theoretical calculations indicate that one can hope to obtain a maximum contrast ratio of three between the point at which the two peaks overlap and the point at which there is no superposition. Nevertheless, this calculation has been carried out assuming that the pulse is not attenuated as it traverses the fluorescent medium. In this paper it will be shown that this attenuation gives rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio. As the fluorescence intensity is proportional to the absorption, an increase in the former will be to the detriment of the contrast ratio. We will attempt to give a criterion for the selection of experimental conditions which lead to maximum intensity without an appreciable decrease in the contrast ratio.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of the thermal decompositions of the hydrates of 5 neutral sulphate complexes and 5 hydroxy-sulphate complexes of uranium(IV). The hydrates did not yield corresponding stable anhydrous compounds. After dehydration, the complexes decomposed in endothermic reactions involving progressive substitution of sulphur trioxide (that is liberated) by oxygen, giving oxy-sulphates and other compunds.

Notes: Abstract We introduce an extension of the concept of variational derivative which allows us to derive an integral identity in the variational formalism. It is applied to characterize the kernel and range of the variational derivative and the divergence operator.

Notes: Abstract For a wide class of lagrangian systems we show rigorously that the conventional formulation of Noether's theorem provides a bijective map from the set of equivalence classes of Noether's symmetries onto the set of equivalence classes of conserved currents. We further discuss if Noether's theorem is generalized in a significant way by several formulations proposed in this decade.
