Notes: An inexpensive and simple CRT system is described for displaying Fourier syntheses computed on a Data General Nova 1200 computer. The synthesis is computed and output on to the CRT screen, one level at a time, from which it is recorded on photographic film. Regions of high electron density appear as areas of high optical density on the photograph.

Notes: The overlapping of reflections during the intensity measurement of a polycrystal (grown-together single crystals) can be checked by formulae given in this paper. These formulae are based on scan mode, scan width and detector aperture.

Notes: A new type of crystal monochromator is presented which facilitates the selection of a precisely fixed wavelength λ0 from a continuum at an intermediate bandwidth Δλ/λ of typically 10−3. Its essential feature is consecutive Bragg reflections from two crystals with slightly different Bragg-plane spacings glued rigidly together at near-parallel orientation. The bicrystal effectively manifests a wavelength standard the exact value of which is determined by the angle β of misorientation of the two crystals. The application of a germanium–silicon version of the new device to neutron interferometry is described. The influence of ray geometry on the values of λ0 and Δλ is discussed.

Notes: A γ Compton experiment with an annular 241Am γ-source is described. The distribution of the primary intensity in the plane of the sample as well as the scattering angle distribution are evaluated by a Monte Carlo calculation to determine (together with the energy resolution) the total momentum resolution of the experiment. In order to probe the reliability of the experimental arrangement and of the data processing, experimental Compton profiles of water from samples of different thicknesses are compared with the results of an IUCr project.

Notes: Amplitude and intensity distributions within the outgoing beams of the triple-Laue-case (LLL) interferometer have been calculated for the case of zero absorption, which in practice is predominantly encountered with thermal neutrons. The type-1 wavefield with antinodes on the atomic sites, which with X-rays is quite frequently anomalously attenuated in the lattice, is here fully taken into account together with the type-2 wavefield of anomalous low absorption. After the combined diffraction by beam splitter, mirror, and analyser crystal of the interferometer for an incident plane wave has been solved, the solution for an incident spherical wave is developed by Fourier expansion, by a similar method to that first given by Kato [Acta Cryst. (1961), 14, 526–532] for just one diffracting crystal plate. In order to optimize the interferometer geometry spatial intensity profiles as functions of the geometric dimensions of the interferometer and of the phase shift between the interfering beams are calculated. The influence of deviations from the ideal geometry is investigated. Deviations of the order of the extinction length can result in a drastic reduction of interference contrast. Very good energy-converging and contrast properties are found if tM = 2tS= 2tA where tM, tS, tA are the thicknesses of mirror, beam splitter, and analyser respectively. The calculated intensity profiles are in agreement with preliminary experimental profiles obtained recently with a silicon interferometer at the HFR in Grenoble.

Notes: A structural refinement of ammonium hydrogen tartrate, C4H9NO6, has been completed from data obtained on an Enraf–Nonius CAD-4 X-ray diffractometer equipped with a Si(Li) solid-state detector. The refinement has given comparable results with those found in the literature. A comparative study of a select number of weak reflections obtained from this study and from the results of an analysis using a conventional scintillation system indicates that the peak-to-background ratio is better for intensity data collected on an X-ray diffractometer using a Si(Li) solid-state detector system. An important application of a Si(Li) energy-dispersive system is X-ray fluorescence analysis which can be performed on the same single-crystal employed in X-ray diffraction data collection. Qualitative determinations and quantiative data on relative percentages of metal constituents have been obtained from single crystals of Lu(OH)3 and Mn3[Co(CN)6]2.12H2O in less than two hours.

Notes: The loss of order in the lithium spinel system Fe(Li0.5Fe1.5 x/8Crx/8)O4 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 is examined as a function of the Cr3+ ion concentration through an analysis of the X-ray superlattice line integrated intensities and line breadths. In these materials it is found that the growth of the antiphase domains is inhibited by the action of Cr3+ ions at the domain boundaries and it is shown that the observed variation of the long-range order parameter may be explained on the basis of a cation distribution on the octahedral sites which adheres to the so-called tetrahedral invariance condition. Furthermore, a correlation exists between the probability of an unstable Cr3+ ion configuration and the formation of domain boundaries. Some discussion is presented on the variation of the domain thickness distribution with Cr3+ ion content.
