    Notes: Abstract Techniques of modelling and simulation are discussed as they relate to bioengineering systems. The advantages and disadvantages of different analytical engineering methods utilized to gather information concerning the behavior of complex physiological and neuromuscular control mechanisms are explained. An Inners Criterion is developed to determine if the roots of a model lie within a certain “biologically realistic region” ΓB, in the complex plane which contains the roots of linearized models for a large variety of neuromuscular systems. Several algorithmic methods based on the Jury Inners Test are described which specify whether the model roots lie within the desired region, thereby providing an indication as to the validity of the proposed model. This technique can help to eliminate tedious simulation on an unrealistic model with roots lying far outside this region. An exemplary model for control of vergence eye movements is presented and shown to satisfy the ΓB criterion; several counter-examples are also discussed. The Inners approach can be adapted to other classes of bioengineering systems by specifying the region based on models that are contained in the class of interest.

    Notes: Abstract Thin antimony films have been epitaxially deposited at 350K onto cleavage surfaces of mica at different residual gas pressures between 10−5 and 10−9 torr, and their resistivity ∂ measured as a function of film thicknessd≦500Å at temperaturesT=110K andT=300K. The ∂(d) characteristics of films deposited at residual gas pressures of about 10−6 torr with condensation rates of about 1Å/s showed generally decreasing slopes as film thicknesses increased, but irregularities in detail. The ∂(d) characteristics of films deposited at 10−8 torr with the same condensation rate decreasing with increasingd, too, show no such irregularities but very small regular variations of ∂(d) with constant oscillation length Δd between the maxima, and decreasing amplitudes with increasingd. These variations are better recognizable in a modified ∂(d) graph. We tend to interprete these variations by the quantum size effect as we found oscillation lengths and amplitudes compatibel with theory.

    Notes: Summary Monolayer cultures of trypsin-dispersed cells of the rat adenohypophysis were grown for 5 to 54 days. ACTH was localized by immunocytochemistry using an antiserum to synthetic ACTH1–28 prepared in rabbit and sheep anti-goat immunoglobulin coupled with peroxidase. ACTH content of the culture medium was measured by radioimmunoassay. Corticotrophs were found in the cultures and ACTH in the medium at each cultivation time. The corticotrophs retained their essential morphological characteristics. Immunological staining was found in the secretory granules, some tubular or saccular structures, parts of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the cytoplasmic matrix. Immature secretory granules in the Golgi apparatus as well as some Golgi elements showed different degrees of immunoreactivity. In agreement with the high ACTH content of the culture medium the number, size and shape of the secretory granules, the active Golgi apparatus, the high amount of extragranular ACTH as well as pictures suggesting granule extrusion claim for a high ACTH synthesis and transport (and low ACTH storage) in the cultured corticotrophs.

    Notes: Abstract A review of the spectral sensitivity and the rhodopsin and metarhodopsin characteristics in three compound eye receptor types (R1–6, R7, and R8) and ocellar receptors is presented (Fig. 1). Photopigment properties were determined from measures of conversion efficiency. The photopigments of R1–6 were studied using in vivo microspectrophotometry in the deep pseudopupil of white-eyed flies. These studies yielded a refined estimate of the R1–6 metarhodopsin spectrum (Fig. 2). The quantum efficiency relative to the spectral sensitivity estimate of the rhodopsin spectrum was factored out. The quantum efficiency of rhodopsin is about 1.75 times that of metarhodopsin. The peak absorbance of metarhodopsin was estimated to be about 2.6 times that of rhodopsin. The mechanism of the two-peaked R1–6 spectral sensitivity and metarhodopsin spectrum is discussed in terms of evidence that there is only one rhodopsin in R1–6 and that vitamin A deprivation preferentially lowers ultraviolet sensitivity. The prolonged depolarizing afterpotential is reviewed from the standpoint of the internal transmitter hypothesis of visual excitation. A careful comparison of the intensity-responsivity for photopigment conversion and its adaptional consequences is made (Fig. 3).

    Notes: Summary Lysine-valinomycin and two N∈-acyl derivatives are compared with respect to their potency to transport Rb+ ions across thin lipid membranes. Lysine-valinomycin acts as a neutral ion carrier only above a pH of about 7 of the aqueous solutions, while at lower pH the molecules seem to be positively charged due to a protonation of the ε-NH2 group of the lysine residue. A kinetic analysis based on voltage jump relaxation experiments and on the nonlinearity of the current-voltage characteristics showed that the conductance increment λ per carrier molecule for uncharged lysine-valinomycin is similar to that of natural valinomycin. The attachment of a rather bulky side group such as the dansyl or para-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl group reduced λ by approximately one order of magnitude. Some of the relaxation data of the valinomycin analogues were influenced by an unspedfic relaxation of the pure lipid membrane. This structural relaxation represents a limitation to the possibility of analyzing specific transport systems in thin lipid membranes by the voltage jump or charge pulse techniques. It is shown that the time dependence of this structural relaxation — which was first published by Sargent (1975) — is at variance with a three capacitor equivalent circuit of the membrane, which was suggested by Coster and Smith (1974) on the basis of a.c. measurements. A modified equivalent circuit has been found to represent a satisfactory analogue for the current relaxation in the presence of valinomycin. It turned out, however, that such an equivalent circuit provides little insight into the molecular mechanism of transport.
