Notes: Abstract Using Ito stochastic differential equations to describe stochastic processes the Onsager-Machlup Function of a nonlinear diffusion process is calculated. It is shown that for two examples the Onsager-Machlup Function calculated directly as limit of finite dimensional probability densities agrees with the formula derived by using the Ito calculus but differs from a formula given by Graham who used the concept of Langevin equations.

Notes: Abstract The Onsager-Machlup function for a one-dimensional diffusion processX t is obtained by means of the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the measure in function space induced byX t with respect to the measure corresponding to an auxiliary diffusion processY t.

Notes: Abstract We try to give a stochastic description for a system which is in contact with a reservoir if the deterministic phenomenological description is given. We compare the phenomenological method, i.e. the enlargement of the phenomenological equation by stochastic parts leading to a stochastic differential equation and the reduction of the microscopic description in the scope of classical physics. The projector method gives a description of the system by a Fokker-Planck equation. The essential facts characterizing a diffusion process are extracted from the structure of these equations. If the systematic part of the phenomenological equation can be derived from generalized Poisson brackets it is possible to give criteria for an ansatz of a stochastic description which is self consistent and in accordance with the results of information theory.

Notes: Summary The aqueous ethanolic extract of 2 related marine spongesHaliclona sp. andChalinopsilla sp. displayed antidermatophyte activities specific forTrichophyton mentagrophytes. The active consituent of both sponges was isolated and shown to be L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid.

Notes: Summary Differential scanning calorimetry was employed for studying rat liver mitochondria and extracted mitochondrial lipids. Endothermic transition in the range 15–40°C was detected for the whole mitochondria and between 10–20°C for the extracted lipids.

Notes: Summary Experimental field plantings showed that plant diversity strongly affected the population dynamics of a specialist herbivore, the striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittata (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Population densities over time were characterized by two peaks in numbers (from colonization and reproduction, respectively) and were consistently higher in cucumber monocultures (Cucumis sativus L.) than in polycultures of cucumbers, corn (Zea mays L.), and broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.). Greater abundances in monocultures appear to result from two factors: (1) per individual reproductive rates were greater in monocultures than in polycultures, and (2) mark-recapture studies confirmed that beetles stay in monocultures for a longer period of time than in polycultures. Differences in predation did not appear to contribute to the overall differences in herbivore abundances. The primary impact of A. vittata on its host plant, C. sativus, is the dissemination of bacterial wilt disease, Erwinia tracheiphila (E.F.Sm.). Greater numbers of beetles led to greater plant mortality in monocultures. It is suggested that factors other than numbers of beetles (e.g., shading, allelopathy, microclimate) are more important in influencing plant reproduction, since cucumber plants in monocultures had greater yields than did plants grown in polycultures. However, time of beetle colonization strongly affected plant parameters, indicating that the length of time during which herbivores are interacting with plants is of critical importance to plant survivorship, and thus reproduction.

Abstract: Summary Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) (fatty acids with 6–12 C) are absorbed more quickly than long chain triglycerides. Medium chain fatty acids are not incorporated into hepatic triglycerides, but oxidized. If MCT are given alone, they stimulate ketogenesis. Nevertheless MCT are of great interest in the diet of numerous affections of the digestive tract. When long chain triglycerides are not tolerated, MCT can replace them with efficiency.

Notes: Summary Differential scanning calorimetry thermograms of native chromaffin granule membranes exhibit several peaks in the 15–35°C region. Extraction of cholesterol increases the size of the melting peaks. Addition of Ca2+ ions does not seem to influence the lipid transitions.

Notes: Abstract By application of the Girsanov formula for measures induced by diffusion processes with constant diffusion coefficients it is possible to define the Onsager-Machlup function as the Lagrangian for the most probable tube around a differentiable function. The absolute continuity of a measure induced by a process with process depending diffusion w.r.t. a quasi translation invariant measure is investigated. The orthogonality of these measures w.r.t. quasi translation invariant measures is shown. It is concluded that the Onsager-Machlup function cannot be defined as a Lagrangian for processes with process depending diffusion coefficients.
