Description / Table of Contents: Neue Cyano-Komplexe des MolybdänsEin neuer Hydroxo-cyano-Komplex des Mov, K4[Mo(CN)2(OH)6] · 4 H2O (gelbgrüne Kristalle) wurde dargestellt und charakterisiert. Auch das Cu-Salz (Monohydrat, violett) und das Ag-Salz (Monohydrat, braun) mit dem gleichen Anion wurde dargestellt.
Notes: A new hydroxo-cyanide of quadrivalent molybdenum K4[Mo(CN)2(OH)6] · 4 H2O has been isolated in pure state as yellowish green crystalline solid and has been characterised by analytical and physicochemical investigations. The new anion [Mo(CN)2(OH)6]4- has been established also by isolating two salts Cu2[Mo(CN)2(OH)6] · H2O und Ag4[Mo(CN)2(OH)6] · H2O as violet and brown solid respectively in pure state.

Notes: The results of the studies on the seasonal patterns of feeding of 203 Labeo rohita (Ham.) taken by cast and seine net for one year from a Bangladesh pond are presented. Studies were based on the frequency of occurrence and the points method. A change in the volume of food with change of seasons was noted. The amounts of food eaten were greater for the warmer than for other months and very low during winter indicating an upturn in late spring with a higher level continuing during the summer.Organic detritus formed the bulk of the gut contents throughout the study period. On a seasonal basis, phytoplankton and aquatic macrophytes were the group of organisms frequently ingested but the former was more important. Animal food was scarce but appreciable quantities of sand and mud were found.

Notes: A chemical examination has revealed four phenolic compounds in nonviable rice seeds (Oryza sativa L.). Their inhibitory bioactivity in the wheat coleoptile extension bioassay and the absence of these components in viable seeds have confirmed the relation of the phenolics with nonviability of the seeds. The compounds isolated from nonviable rice seeds were Kaempferol-4′-methyl ether, Kaempferol, quercetin and caffeic acid as identified on the basis of physical and chemical evidences.

Notes: PMMA beam specimens were tested in four-point bending to determine if the bending strength of acrylic bone cement, as used in posterior spinal fusion, could be improved by metal-wire reinforcement. The result showed that the load-carrying capacities of 1- and 0.5-mm diam stainless-steel-wire-reinforced PMMA specimens in bending were significantly higher than similar unreinforced normal PMMA samples. On an average, steel reinforcement comprising approximately 1% of the cross-sectional area of the PMMA specimens caused a 15% increase in bending strength. Even after the cement fractured, the reinforcing wires still sustained an appreciable amount of bending moment, thus preventing catastrophic failure of cement alone.

Description: The major carps such as Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla, and Labeo calbasu, which constitute important economic food-fishes in India, breed only in rivers, and consequently the spawn and fry of these fishes are collected from riverine resources for culture in ponds and tanks. The present paper describes our extensive survey of fish spawn-collection grounds in the River Ganges (from Barauni to Farakka, a stretch of about 256 km). In the course of these studies, active and major sites of spawning were located at Monghyr, Sultanganj, Akbarnagar, Sonbarsa, Bhagalpur, Colgong, Sahibganj, Rajmahal, Manikchak, and Farakka. Some of the environmental factors, such as water transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and meteorological conditions for spawning of fishes, were analysed.
