Notes: A method is given for generating the Yamanouchi-Kotani genealogical spin eigenfunctions which requires neither storage of eigenfunctions for smaller numbers of electrons, nor summations of large order, nor explicit use of results from the theory of representations of the symmetric group. An explicit formula is given for the coefficients of expansion in terms of spin products.

Notes: Truncation errors introduced by operator splittingtechniques, such as the ADI scheme, are discussed in the contextof the two-dimensional shallow-water equations. Numericalexamples of flow along a uniform channel, with and withoutfriction, illustrate the practical significance of these errors when the boundary is not aligned with the computational gridaxes. With irregular boundaries the maximum time step aceptable ismore severely restricted than has been realized hitherto. The problem, which is shown to stem from the treatment of the boundary conditons, is inherent in any splitting scheme and is difficult to circumvent.

Notes: A theoretical formulation and the analysis of heat conducting fibre-reinforced structures are shown herein. Viscoelastoplastic behaviour at infinitesimal strain is considered in the context of non-equilibrium irreversible thermodynamics. To demonstrate the theory, a fibre-reinforced cylindrical rod subjected to a dynamic axial load is solved via the finite elements. Strain hardening of both fibres and matrix media is incorporated in the analysis. The results clarify the relationships of energy dissipation resulting from viscoelasticity, plasticity, or the combined effects with respect to orientation of the fibres.

Notes: A simple analytical form of induced anisotropy of heat conductivity kij(λ1,λ2λ3,T) of initially isotropic polymer solids results from employing the simplified theory of the three-chain model of the non-Gaussian network. The analytical form appears to be valid up to a stretch ratio of λ = 2.65, which is the limit of existing experimental data. The effect of induced anisotropy on the temperature distribution, due to the large deformations, is illustrated for a highly expanded spherical shell and a cylindrical tube under a steady-state heat flow using the derived analytical form of the strain-dependent heat conductivity.

Notes: The technique for staining unsaturated additives within cotton fibers reacts osmium tetroxide with a sorbyl moiety which has been attached to the cellulose chain. Resulting electron micrographs indicate that contrast is considerably enhanced. Measurements of fibrillar size averaged 0.30 nm, closely approximating the values in the literature.

Notes: The kinetics of growth of a Torulopsis sp. was investigated in a continuous culture with glucose or hexadecane as the carbon source; growth was limited by either carbon or nitrogen. The relationship between the concentration of the limited substrate and the steady-state growth rate of the organism was examined and tested against various models of growth. No existing model was found to describe the growth accurately and a new model has been proposed: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \mu = D_T \cdot \frac{s}{{K_s + s}} + as $$\end{document} It is postulated that this behavior would result from a simple first order reaction between the reactants of the rate-limiting enzymic reaction of the organism's metabolism.

Notes: A molecular-thermodynamic correlation is established for calculating vapor-liquid equilibria in aqueous solutions containing one or more volatile electrolytes: ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen cyanide. The correlation is similar to that presented in 1975, but the domain of application has been increased. The present correlation holds from about 0° to 170°C and for ionic strengths of about 6 molal; for the weak electrolytes considered here, this corresponds to total concentrations between 10 and 20 molal. To represent activities at these high concentrations, activity coefficients are expressed as a function of molality by Pitzer's equation. Required parameters are estimated from data reduction or from correlations.Special attention is given to the ternary systems ammonia-carbon dioxide-water and ammonia-hydrogen sulfide-water. Calculated equilibria are in satisfactory agreement with the severely limited experimental data now available.
