Description: X-ray diffraction shows that complete virus particles and empty capsids crystallize isomorphously. The surface morphology of the protein coat, as revealed by electron microscopy, is the dominant structural feature determining the intensity of x-ray reflections to a resolution of approximately 30 angstroms. The structure and variability of the viral chromatin core can now be analyzed by comparison of electron density maps.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Adolph, K W -- Caspar, D L -- Hollingshead, C J -- Lattman, E E -- Phillips, W C -- Murakami, W T -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Mar 16;203(4385):1117-20.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/218286" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: C-banding, G-banding, and silver (Ag-AS) staining techniques reveal a distinctive sex chromosome system in the turtle Staurotypus salvinii. Unlike previously described systems in most other vertebrate groups in which the Y or W is derived and the homogametic sex represents the primitive condition, the reverse is true for S. salvinii. The X chromosome is derived; thus the homogametic sex (female) is more derived than the heterogametic sex. The male is intermediate between the female and the ancestral condition observed in other turtle species. Staurotypus does not confirm to the general model of sex chromosome evolution for diploid dioecious organisms.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sites, J W Jr -- Bickham, J W -- Haiduk, M W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Dec 21;206(4425):1410-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/92052" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The relative frequency of appearance of discontinuities in the postsynaptic thickening, or perforations in the subsynaptic plate, increased with age and experience. Rats reared from weaning in complex or social environments had a significantly higher proportion of occipital cortical synapses with perforations than did rats reared in isolation. In addition, the relative frequency of these perforations more than tripled between 10 and 60 days of age. Shifts in the frequency of perforations can occur independently of changes in the size of synpases. This result suggests a new potential mechanism of synaptic plasticity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Greenough, W T -- West, R W -- DeVoogd, T J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Dec 8;202(4372):1096-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/715459" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Western Europe, now largely dependent on oil imports, has to prepare for strong competition for oil and energy imports in general before the year 2000. The more unlikely it is for Western Europe to secure from outside rich supplies of coal or uranium at readily acceptable economic and political conditions, the more serious this competition becomes. Even exceptionally low projections of economic growth and optimistic assumptions about energy conservation urgently call for vigorous and simultaneous development of indigenous coal and nuclear sources, including the breeder. Long-term contracts for the possession and deployment of foreign oil, gas, and coal deposits are mandatory and should be negotiated in view of the possible aggravation of north-south confrontation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hafele, W -- Sassin, W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Apr 14;200(4338):164-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17818793" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Studies of the spectral reflectance of the eggs of 25 species of birds from nine families disclosed uniformly high reflectance (often above 90 percent) in the near infrared. This property is associated with the presence of the eggshell pigments protoporphyrin and the bilins. These pigments allow coloration for cryptic or other purposes with minimum solar heating, a combination not possible with the melanin pigments typical of vertebrates.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bakken, G S -- Vanderbilt, V C -- Buttemer, W A -- Dawson, W R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Apr 21;200(4339):321-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17745564" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Surgical removal of colon carcinomas leads to a decrease in the rate of incorporation of [14C]fucose into its endogenous acceptor in human serum; normal incorporation rates are attained within 14 days. A similar time course has been determined for alpha2- and alpha3-fucosyltransferase when either desialo- or desialodegalactofetuin are employed as exogenous acceptors. A correlation has also been seen between transferase activity and the therapeutic response of patients with breast cancer. These results indicate that the determination of fucosyltransferase activity can facilitate the diagnosis of neoplasia, and the success of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bauer, C H -- Reutter, W G -- Erhart, K P -- Kottgen, E -- Gerok, W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Sep 29;201(4362):1232-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/694511" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Four volatile chemical compounds have been identified as apparently unique constituents in urines of red foxes (both sexes) during the winter season when mating occurs. Quinaldine was found only in male fox urine. Several other compounds identified are found in other species also. Some or all of these compounds may function in olfactory communication in the red fox.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Jorgenson, J W -- Novotny, M -- Carmack, M -- Copland, G B -- Wilson, S R -- Katona, S -- Whitten, W K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Feb 17;199(4330):796-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17836296" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The variation of concentrations of hydrogen, sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, silicon, and aluminum as a function of depth in the hydration layer of obsidian artifacts has been determined by sputter-induced optical emission. The surface hydration is accompanied by dealkalization, and there is a buildup of alkaline earths, calcium and magnesium in the outermost layers. These results have clarified the phenomena underlying the obsidian hydration dating technique.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tsong, I S -- Houser, C A -- Yusef, N A -- Messier, R F -- White, W B -- Michels, J W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jul 28;201(4353):339-41.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17793728" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A single injection of 5 or 10 microliters of ferrous or ferric chloride into rat or cat sensorimotor cortex resulted in chronic recurrent focal paroxysmal electroencephalographic discharges as well as behavioral convulsions and electrical seizures. Recurrent focal epileptiform discharge caused by cortical injection of iron salts suggests that the development of human posttraumatic epilepsy may depend, in part, on the neurochemical alterations induced by the principal metallic ions found in whole blood.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Willmore, L J -- Sypert, G W -- Munson, J V -- Hurd, R W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jun 30;200(4349):1501-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/96527" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
