    Description: Evidence is presented for the existence of a gene, probably on the X chromosome, which prevents testis differentiation when present in 46,XY human embryos. Affected 46,XY women are not completely normal because of premature ovarian involution, as a result of which they have "streak gonads" similiar to those of 45,X women.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉German, J -- Simpson, J L -- Chaganti, R S -- Summitt, R L -- Reid, L B -- Merkatz, I R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Oct 6;202(4363):53-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/567843" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Cultured skin fibroblasts from subjects with cystic fibrosis exhibited normal population doubling times in early passages. After about 13 cumulative population doublings, cystic fibrosis lines doubled more slowly than controls and ceased doubling after about 19 weekly passages. Control lines continued doubling for 27 passages. The premature senescence noted in cells from subjects with cystic fibrosis reconciles controversial observations of cell doubling reported in the literature. Data presented here demonstrate that experiments with cystic fibrosis cells in late passage may generate misleading results since differences from control lines may be ascribed to generalized senile changes rather than to specific results of the cystic fibrosis genotype.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Shapiro, B L -- Lam, L F -- Fast, L H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Mar 23;203(4386):1251-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/424752" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Angiotensin I convertase activity has been found in human alveolar macrophages from normal volunteers and patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis. This activity is higher in the alveolar macrophages from smokers than from nonsmokers, and is even more elevated in sarcoid patients. The activity can be detected with both angiotensin I and bradykinin analogs and appears to require protein synthesis, but the enzyme is not secreted by alveolar macrophages in culture.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hinman, L M -- Stevens, C -- Matthay, R A -- Bernard, J -- Gee, L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Jul 13;205(4402):202-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/221980" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Human platelets were induced by 2.1-megahertz ultrasound to form aggregates around gas-filled pores in membranes immersed in platelet-rich plasma. The spatial peak intensities required were only about 16 to 32 milliwatts per square centimeter. Ultrasound generated by a medical Doppler device, whose intensity exceeded this, induced aggregate formation under the same conditions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Miller, D L -- Nyborg, W L -- Whitcomb, C C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Aug 3;205(4405):505-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/451616" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Mice with the mutant gene tottering (tg, chromosome 8, autosomal recessive) show, in adolescence, abnormal bursts of bilaterally synchronous spike waves as revealed in electrocorticograms recorded over long periods. The spike waves are accompanied by behavioral "absence" attacks and intermittent focal motor seizures showing somatotopic progression. Cerebral metabolic activity during seizures was assayed by autoradiography of brain sections from mice injected intravenously with 14C-labeled 2-deoxyglucose. Metabolic activity was increased bilaterally in selected brainstem structures. Spontaneous electrocorticographic and clinical seizures of this general pattern were recognized hitherto only in humans.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Noebels, J L -- Sidman, R L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Jun 22;204(4399):1334-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/572084" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The intracellular distribution of fluorine has been delineated in human platelets incubated with 4,6-difluoroserotonin, utilizing a scanning-transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy-loss spectrometer. Discrete intracellular structures corresponding in location to dense bodies contained high concentrations of fluorine. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy, which apparently can detect less than 10(-20) gram of fluorine in an area of 10 square nonometers, can thus localize fluorinated tracer molecules with biological activity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Costa, J L -- Joy, D C -- Maher, D M -- Kirk, K L -- Hui, S W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 May 5;200(4341):537-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/644312" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Nineteen normal male subjects received 1.0 milligram of physostigmine or 1.0 milligram of saline by a slow intravenous infusion on two nonconsecutive days. Physostigmine significantly enhanced storage of information into long-term memory. Retrieval of information from long-term memory was also improved. Short-term memory processes were not significantly altered by physostigmine.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Davis, K L -- Mohs, R C -- Tinklenberg, J R -- Pfefferbaum, A -- Hollister, L E -- Kopell, B S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jul 21;201(4352):272-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/351807" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Using a combination of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and selected ion recording techniques, we have identified nicotine and its major metabolite, continine, in the breast fluid of nonlactating women smokers. As little as 25 picograms could be measured by using the deuterated variants, [5',5'-2H]nicotine and [3,3-2H]cotinine, both as internal standards and as carriers in an inverse isotope dilution method.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Petrakis, N L -- Gruenke, L D -- Beelen, T C -- Castagnoli, N Jr -- Craig, J C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jan 20;199(4326):303-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/619458" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The contrast sensitivity of the rhesus monkey was tested, according to a modified reaction-time paradigm, for sine-wave grating targets at different orientations. The monkey possesses an oblique effect slightly larger than that of humans. A reaction time analysis showed the oblique effect to be a suprathreshold as well as a threshold phenomenon. The presence of this effect further strengthens the use of the monkey as a model for the human visual system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Boltz, R L -- Harwerth, R S -- Smith, E L 3rd -- R01 EY001139/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Aug 3;205(4405):511-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/109923" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: High- and low-density lipoproteins carrying free cholesterol labeled with 3H or 14C were administered to a patient with a bile fistula. The free cholesterol from high-density lipoproteins was more rapidly incorporated into biliary cholesterol than the free cholesterol from low-density lipoproteins. These findings show that the liver in man selectively utilizes and secretes the free cholesterol from a particular lipoprotein.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schwartz, C C -- Halloran, L G -- Vlahcevic, Z R -- Gregory, D H -- Swell, L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Apr 7;200(4337):62-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/204996" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
