Description: The nucleotide sequence of SV40 DNA was determined, and the sequence was correlated with known genes of the virus and with the structure of viral messenger RNA's. There is a limited overlap of the coding regions for structural proteins and a complex pattern of leader sequences at the 5' end of late messenger RNA. The sequence of the early region is consistent with recent proposals that the large early polypeptide of SV40 is encoded in noncontinguous segments of DNA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Reddy, V B -- Thimmappaya, B -- Dhar, R -- Subramanian, K N -- Zain, B S -- Pan, J -- Ghosh, P K -- Celma, M L -- Weissman, S M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 May 5;200(4341):494-502.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/205947" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Fibroblasts from New Zealand Black mouse fetuses manifest increased frequency of chromosomal breaks and interchanges after exposure to ultraviolet radiation when compared with cells from BABL/c fetuses. This chromosomal instability is similar to what has been reported in cells from patients with xeroderma pigmentosum and may be related to the chromosomally abnormal clones and malignancy previously reported in adult New Zealand Black mice.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Reddy, A L -- Fialkow, P G -- Salo, A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Sep 8;201(4359):920-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/684417" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The paper describes the dynamic ice-structure interaction study of monopod platforms (fixed type) which are of considerable interest to the off-shore oil industry in cold regions. In view of the scantiness of continuous ice-force records, artificial-force records are generated from available small-scale field ice-force records using stochastic concepts. The method, based on the similarity between the fluctuating parts of randomly varying ice-force records and the seismic records uses a non-stationary random process obtained from filtering a shot noise through a second-order filter. The dynamic response analysis of a monopod structure located at Cook Inlet, Alaska, is carried out by hybridizing the relevant sub-routines of the computer programmes, SAP IV (Structural Analysis Programme) and EATSW (Earthquake response of Axisymmetric Tower Structures surrounded by Water). The work includes a study of the influence of soil properties on the frequencies and responses, and a comparison between the responses of fixed and elastically supported (by the soil foundation) monopod platforms.

Description: This work describes experiments in which a stably stratified salt solution is subjected to steady lateral temperature gradients. The criteria for the onset of layered convection are observed to agree with previously published stability analysis. Convective layers formed in this way are found to be statically unstable; they always merge two into one to form a new system. This process continues until the density jump at the solute interface between layers is larger than the density deficit produced by the side wall heating/cooling. The eventual stable system develops into well-mixed convective layers separated by sharp solute interfaces. The conditions for any subsequent layer intermixing and its effect on the lateral heat transfer across the slot, are also described. © 1979, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: SummaryThe effects of paraquat (l, 1'-dimethyl-4, 4'-dipyridylium dichloride or Gramoxone) and diquat (l,1'-ethylene-2, 2'-dipyridylium dichloride or Reglone) on inhibition of flowering and the effect of such an inhibition on improvement of cane yield and juice quality in late maturing sugarcane varieties Co. 853 (early-season flowering) and Co. 419 (mid-late season flowering) planted in February were studied under field conditions at Coimbatore (latitude 11° N). In Co. 419, the spray of paraquat @ 0·35 kg a.i./ha and diquat @ 0·45 kg a.i./ha (diluted in 3000 1 of water) in two equal doses at 3–4 day intervals during the 1st and 2nd week of August suppressed the flowering almost completely, while in Co. 853 flowering could not be checked successfully by chemical spray. Flowering in Co. 853 could be checked only when the spindle leaves were cut continuously from 15 July to 12 August at 4–5 day intervals. In Co. 419, cutting leaf spindles at any day between 1 August and 12 August prevented flowering totally. The sprayed non-flowered crop of Co. 419 gave 13·84–15·69 t/ha more cane yield in February and 16·14–18·07 t/ha in April, whereas sugar yield increased by 1·16 t/ha in February and 3·56 t/ha in April compared with the control flowered crop. There was practically no difference in paraquat and diquat sprays. Suppression of flowering by defoliation in Co. 853 also increased the cane and sugar yield in and after February.
